deleting images from external HD takes hours

Hi, new user trouble here...

Deleting 300 images from trash (remove from disk) is taking 2 hours so far.

Thats 10x longer than it took to create the entire catalog, including copying the files from memory card to the same HD and generating previeuws.

My RAW files are on a WD my book duo external HD in raid, and my catalog is on the primary SDD where capture pro installed it in the Images folder. I'm using windows 10.

It's not a large catalog, 700 images total. I also made sure the HD is not in "sleep mode" in case that matters

All images are unedited. It's just the bad ones I moved to trash. I don't get it.

First it said "about 2 minutes left"... For 45 minutes. Now it says 48 minutes left and that message has been there for the past hour... 

My other apps don't  have any problem accessing the HD.

I had the same problem right after I installed Capture Pro, but the it was only 20 images or so, I quit the program after 20 minutes because I thought it crashed.

If I delete a very small number of images at a time it happens immediately with no problems.

    another hour later and I still have 70 images left to go, this is going to take all the afternoon.
