Composite Masks
Not currently plannedThere have been several requests for AI masking, and obviously C1 needs to add this feature to stay remotely competitive with Lightroom, On1 etc. But there’s another core masking feature that also needs to be added: Composite masks. The ability to add, subtract or intersect groups of masks without rasterizing them. This is what Lightroom, Affinity Photo 2, and other software now have.
So for example, C1 needs to allow us to create a mask group that is the combination of two different gradients. We should be able to choose whether we are adding or subtracting them. The gradients should remain as adjustable objects so we can change them later. The same should apply to painted masks, luma masks, and AI masks (when we get them).
Right now we could add two different gradients, or luma masks, but only by rasterizing first. . So in this case there is no ability to go back and adjust the masks if the total effect is not right

Hi everyone,
Thank you for the suggestion - this is not something we are currently working on.This does not mean this is a bad suggestion or that it will never be adressed, but in an effort of transparency we want you to know that we are not currently allocating resources to solving this issue.
We will revisit the status of this thread if and when it changes.

Yes, that would be great, so I have added my vote. I also requested the same thing in June last year.
In the meantime, something that could be helpful with your last point, what I do whenever I create a Luma Mask, is keep it as a separate Layer with no adjustments, then copy the mask to a "working" Layer where I do the adjustments and can rasterise it. This way, if you realise after making adjustments that you need to tweak the luma range, you can go back and do that and copy it again. So, for example, you might have Layers as such:
(luma mask copy - sky)
AL1: sky
AL2: ground

That is a good work-around. But honestly, if we don't have vastly improved masking by Capture One 24, I will, regretfully, be migrating back to Lightroom. I like Capture One's interface, but I'm losing faith that they have the engineering resources to catch up with the rest of the image processing world.
I hope I am wrong.

When I started using C1 a few years ago I was amazed by it's masking - it was miles ahead of anything else I'd used til then. But I guess the competition have leaped ahead since then and C1 has been caught napping in that area, I guess while they've been focusing on other areas

The much-improved masking in Lightroom (layer add/subtract) swayed me back today for some work. It's just so useful, along with the AI select, which works well for studio work and cleaning backgrounds.
Lightroom on my system is much less performant though compared to C1, and layout of tooling not as great. I do hope features like you describe come to C1, as I much prefer using it. But for some sessions that masking in LR is just amazing now!

Yes please!

Please! Don't want move back to LR, the A.I Mask is just so good.

Yes, I do agree. I have submitted more than 1/2 dozen requests in the past 2 years specifically related to Layers and masks.
CO should work on 2 areas since they are interlinked,
1. Layer Framework Redesign - I think it is very old with lots of limitations that need next-generation optimization. It can be enhanced with Max Layers count, lock option, custom preset and the interaction between layers and performance improvement etc...
2. Mask - It should be a "Subset" of Layer mechanism. It should have a separate popup dialog to perform all mask operations like add, subtract and intersect etc...

I support the request.
While automatic subject selection could be nice (though I doubt it will work well enough to be useful very often), I'd much rather have operations on masks, such as "join/union" and "intersect".
This functionality would be very easy to implement, the hardest part would be to get the UI right (which is not that hard).
It should furthermore not be necessary to rasterise parametric masks, just so they can be combined with brushed masks.
While work is being done on layers and makes, Capture One should bring back an option to allow layers to be overridden. Currently, adding a layer from another image is the only supported operation and while it is a great one, overriding should be an option. It is currently a pain to replace existing layers in a number of images because there is no quick way to remove the existing layers before the revised layers are added. A replacement option would obviate the need for layer removal from multiple images.

Hey Will Rabinovich, Boris Tomsic, Jason, John Friend, Alan Brandt, Papasnarf, Prasad Palaniyandi, Class A, thanks for your feedback!
Please note that we already have a similar request here, so I would like to ask you to vote for that post as I will soon remove this one as a duplicate.
