The G key selects the linear gradient tool by default.
    Did you change that?

Can't remember.  Menu option View/Viewer then instead.  The behaviour did not reproduce for you?

"In summary, after changing the curve setting on one image, with it being the only selected image, and with edit selected off - the setting gets applied to every subsequent image I happen to click on. This behavior seems to be triggered by turning off the viewer.   In addition, thumbnails are not redrawn at anytime after first drawing."

I use dual screens with the viewer on one monitor and the tools and permanent grid display on the other and the problem does not happen with that setup even if I close the viewer.

Switching to default workspace on a single monitor I am definitely seeing the problem you are.
Once the viewer is gone anything clicked on in grid view is being assigned whatever film curve is displayed back in the base characteristics tool.

    Ok, I'll submit as well.
(Notice it also happens with sessions.)
