iPad tethering needs a powered hub?

I can successfully tether my R6 to my iPad Pro 12.9” but only if I use a powered Hub… my understanding was I could use a simple single USB c to USB c cable? 
any help I’d be grateful

    I don't have that issue. iPad Pro 11", USB-C cable, connect to my Sony A7R3 and it works as expected. I'm replying in March, 2023.  Are you still having the issue?

    Hi Chris. Thanks for responding. I Resolved this through c1 support ticket. It turns out that my iPad has a broken port and will not supply power. I confirmed this when I tried to charge my iPhone from my iPad…

    Yikes, I hope that bad boy is still covered under AppleCare!

    every Apple product I purchase includes the AppleCare extended warranty, has paid for itself many times over in the years I’ve had that service
