    Thanks for your good wishes.

Just one brief point of fact: it is my understanding that Capture One and Phase One have been separate companies for some time now.

Ian, I didn't know. Fixed the post.

Math is simple: unhappy costumers = less costumers = less incoming = less innovation = unhappy costumers = ...

The company thinks they can give little value and ask for big rewards. The brain of the company thinks it works like this; it has been thinking this way for several years. It has no hope of surviving.

The problem isn't the subscription, it is the people at the helm of the company.

I found a great video on Capture One pricing. Fully agree with the author of the video. When there is so much hatred from customers from all sides for pricing, then clearly the company is doing something wrong.

Personally, I think that's dumb on their part.  If they are making you pay full price just because you skipped one upgrade, then they automatically cause the customer to reconsider all the alternatives because there's no pricing advantage to staying with C1 at all.

    [...]

But, much of this speculation and angst about what the loyalty plan is or isn't just didn't need to ever happen.  They should not have announced a change in perpetual licensing at all until they could give us the full picture of the change.  Instead, they said "there will be no C24".

    [...]

That's, frankly, just a dumb way to communicate with customers unless the real goal is to try to get as many of the perpetual license customers to go away (that's honestly what it feels like).  I, personally, will likely be going away to a competitive product.

    How true this is!

In my case, the choice of a tool for work (or hobby) is determined by both functional considerations - whether the tool works as it should, has all the desired functions, etc. - but also non-functional considerations: do I like the people or the company that creates the tool, do I feel that they care about me and my needs, do I want to support them with my money? Cost is also important, but as long as the first two items work, I can pay more.

The announcement from early December blew up the second piece of the puzzle (the feeling that the company cares about me and my needs). It's not just about the content, but also the choice of the moment and the choice of words - it was really sad to read.

The third piece of the puzzle has not been in favor of Capture One for a long time. As I wrote, as long as the first two items worked, I could ignore it, but I'm sure I have paid more for Capture One in the last few years than I would have paid for a subscription to Adobe's Photography Plan in that time.

So we come to the first element - functionality. In a way, I am grateful to Capture One for the December announcement, because if it wasn't for this announcement, maybe for the next few years I wouldn't look at where Adobe and the competition are now. When I left Adobe years ago, it wasn't just because of the subscription model and feeling that Capture One were "the good guys" as opposed to Adobe - I also liked the editing results with Capture One better than what I was getting with Lightroom. Now I downloaded new versions of these programs and wow! The camera matching profiles for my Pentax and Ricoh GRs in Adobe Camera Raw are good, the lens profile for the relatively recently released Pentax D-FA 21mm 2.4 Limited is already there, auto masking and other tools are improved - I like it! On January 14, my Adobe Photography Plan subscription comes into effect for at least one year.

What's next for my use of Capture One? I don't know, and it doesn't really bother me at the moment. In my case, Capture One is just a RAW editor (I don't use the catalog function). My experience shows that I very rarely go back to already developed RAW files to improve something - and even if I do, a new edit from scratch usually gives better results than correcting an old work from years ago (because I have more experience, because the tools are better, etc.). So parting with Capture One will not be a big tragedy - I will use this tool as long as it suits me, and when the time comes to buy a new tool (at full price!), I will choose the one that will work best with other elements of my workflow at the moment.

And I work more and more with DxO Photolab. In this application, the most accurate profiles for cameras and optics. Profiles are quickly loaded directly from the DxO database. The color handling and raw rendering in this application is one of the most accurate on the market. If you add the best noise reduction and many other features, it turns out that this is one of the best alternatives to Adobe Lightroom or Capture One without a subscription model.

This really smells a lot like a bunch of hedge fund MBAs (who now run the company) trying to squeeze the most money out of the customers when they have zero idea about how you should treat customers to build brand trust and loyalty.

Their job is to make the P&L, balance sheet and commercial outlook shine... and then exit. I wonder if they are also off-shoring development.

Anyway, I'm not making any permanent decisions until I see what this loyalty program is,

I've made a permanent decision and executed it, my money went to France this time. For a perpetual (permanent) license of DXO Photolab and Film Pack, not to Denmark/GB for v23 or any Styles. This is a pro decision for DXO, support these guys, not (yet) a contra decision against C1.
