@Leo FABRIZIO An option to change the colour of the lines would indeed have been more useful. The new, fat lines are easier to see, but they're not doing much for precision.

Your frustration is very understandable. I keep my catalogue on an internal drive (MacBook Pro), though all image files are on an external drive.
