I have the same problem. I thought the write to XMP was the culprit but unchecking it doesn't solve the problem. Same thing happens: you loose the rating if you don't wait the few seconds.

They don't work period when using catalogs.If you want to add a new adjustment layer, the changes will be applied globally (like the background layer) instead on the masked area.
