It turned-out to be an issue with my installation of Windows 8.1...not sure exactly what, but I re-installed Windows (it was way overdue anyway) and the issue was resolved.

After some testing, it appears that the local adjustments are the culprit. I cannot export a variant on any RAW files from either my Sony A7 or NEX-F3 that have any local adjustment layers applied....
