Referenced catalog can't locate edits
I use a referenced catalog and it became corrupted. I have a Mac and the referenced files are untouched on an external hard drive and the catalog is on my internal drive. I restored a backup from Time Machine but despite being 90GB in size it didn't link to the referenced files. I had to use the "show package contents" and somehow use a backup version of the catalog from there. It only has the edits to the date of that backup, other backups do not work. However all the edits including beyond that date are in a folder system under "adjustments" - how do I link these to the original files

Before reverting to the backup, did you try using the Catalog > Verify function? Or was the catalog too badly messed up to be repaired?
Do the image files show up as "Offline"? If so, use "Locate" to re-link the catalog with the images. For example, in my referenced catalog case, all originals are in a folder structure contained within a "Photo Originals" folder. I can re-sync all photos by clicking on the top-level folder and selecting it from Locate. You might try Locate and re-sync anyway, and maybe C1 will do what you want.
You could also try clicking on folders in your library and selecting "Synchronize".
If none of the above work, you might need to submit a Support Request...

thanks for replying. The catalog was too badly damaged. The catalog was completely empty - there were no folders or files at all. It was like a brand new empty catalog. Even weirder was when I tried to reimport the files they showed up in the import dialogue, but none were imported and the file structure remained empty. I turned off "ignore duplicates" and it made no difference at all.
I have raised a support issue

Sometimes a way to recover a damaged catalog is to create a new empty catalog then import the old damaged catalog into it. It can't harm to try.

Good idea and tried. It just says it's not a valid catalog database and can't do it. I've also tried opening it in the previous version of Capture one, but still completely blank.

sarah isaacs – do you have any backup of the catalog from File > Backup Catalog that you can restore?

I've tried that and it has brought some stuff through but not others and it's really weird. Some have come through perfectly and I can see star rating and edits. Some photos have a star rating but no edits. Some photos have the "edit" icon on them but no star rating (I only edit once I've culled with a star rating) and some of those with the edit icon look as if they haven't been edited at all when I use the adjustments tab. This is using the file from just before I went away and some of the folders aren't there. When I re-import them they come through with star ratings but no edits but when I look insider the package all the edits to all the photos are there in the "adjustments folder"

The Adjustments folder inside a catalog only has layer masks. It is a deceiving folder name. The actual adjustments are only stored in the catalog database.

As an update - I still haven't heard from support but by fiddling around in the "package contents" (I have a Mac) of the main catalog file and making two catalogs reflecting different time periods from my fiddling i.e pre 2013 and then post 2013 I have got most of my edits back apart from my last two trips this year (~3500 photos). I'm exporting each project from these two catalogs and importing them into a brand new catalog. It's slow and laborious but it seems to be working.
There does appear to be some things that aren't the same - some of these projects are being imported so that the photos are in the catalog not as referenced files, even though the original project was using referenced file. As the edits are coming through that is a small price to pay even though it means the catalog file is huge. Is there a way I can change this easily?
I've realised why there were some "blank imports" so this might help someone. The original files for those projects were referenced in the catalog in the folders section already. If I deleted them from here then I could import the project/catalog with my previous edits. Even though it asked me on import whether I wanted to keep the existing, imported or all, none of these options worked. I had to delete the folder i.e the reference to the original files.

Now I'll just wait for support to see if they can help me with my most recent 3500 images . . . .

If the images are coming in to the new catalog as managed ("In Catalog") don't worry about it. You can move them out later to be referenced instead, as follows.
- In Finder, create the folder or folders you would like the photos to go in;
- In Capture One, add the new folder or folders to the catalog (using the + in the Folders section of the Library tool);
- In Capture One, drag images from the "In Catalog" location to the folder(s) you want them to be in. Capture One will move them and keep track of the edits.

Thanks. As the original photos are already in folders in a system on a separate HD, can I drag them to the same folder to "over write" them?

sarah isaacs - I would hesitate to do that, in case it messed things up. Why not create a new folder for the images, and once they are successfully moved, delete the old copies? Just to be on the safe side.
