Capture One 20 Upgrade Eligibility
I am very upset with Capture One. I received a promo email back in October to upgrade from C11 to C12. I was hesistant cause I thought maybe they may have a new release coming up soon. But I thought to myself its late in the year so I maybe able to get an upgrade if one comes in November. I went to C1 website and after extensive research I came across this article about their policy which says:
"However, those users who had purchased Capture One just before a new version of the software was released have the right for a free upgrade. Please consider that free upgrades allow you to use the next version only. For instance, a Capture One 10 license with a single free upgrade would allow you to activate Capture One 11 with the same key. It would not let you skip Capture One 11 and activate Capture One 12." - https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002398417-All-about-Capture-One-licenses-Upgrades-updates-and-activations-explained
Based on that I decided to upgrade. Now with Capture one 20 its asking me to pay $126 to upgrade in just 2 months. I have asked support via email and they refuse to give me a free upgrade, saying I should have upgrade on Oct 23. I explained to them there was no where in the email that said I should have waited until Oct 23rd. I think this is just not fair and a complete rip off, I am will basically pay an almost full price for C1 cause I did not wait 17 days. Is this me being unreasonable or just not fair?

Unfortunately they use to write on purchase when you're eligible for a free upgrade so you know what you're paying for. If you went to buy from October 23 the site stated that a free upgrade to 20 was included. Before that date it was not regardless it was 25, 17, 10, 2 or 1 days before, unless they decide to make a concession to you. The grace period this year has lasted even more than a full month (they probably waited after Black Friday on purpose) so I'm afraid you can't do more than keep your feelings if they've already refused to give you the upgrade.0 -
Thank you for the reply. Some of us are new the C1 and is annoying and misleading the way they went about it. Why send out an email in early October when you will send another one that same month with a free upgrade and have some people miss out 17 days later. I did see that promo you're talking about but that happened right after I upgraded. Just not fair at all. 0 -

I can just think that Phase One's purpose, like that of all the other companies, is to sell products, not to give them away so they want and need to sell everyday. Offers and promotions are made to sell more, attracting or convincing those who wouldn't buy otherwise. Did your first mail had an offer too (even without upgrade) or did you pay the full price to upgrade to 12?0 -
I definitely don't mind paying for software. Just want to be treated fairly also. I was on C1 11 and I wanted to upgrade to C1 12 the email came on Oct 3rd to upgrade to C1 12. I was hesitant but as you can see from the link I posted earlier it says if it's upgraded in a reasonable time frame you get a free uograde, there are no mention of the 40 days grace period. I went by that policy and on Black Friday they sent another email saying if you upgraded on Oct 23rd you get free upgrade. Why could they not have said that in the Oct 6th email. It's really misleading. Now I have to pay another upgrade fee of $126. Together it's almost the cost of paying a full price for a new C1 pro. 0 -
I understand your emotions about this series of events. There are always a few customers who just bought before the grace period starts.
But if you were using Capture One 11 in October 2019, that release was almost 2 years old, you apparently don't mind having the latest and greatest. So, why getting upset by marketing tricks?
You upgraded to Capture One 12 when it suited you, having used a promotion, saving a few bucks. Enjoy it!
If you ever feel you like to upgrade, do it at your own pace. Maybe wait for a summer promotion (just making this up), Black Friday sale or whatever.
At least you now know that new versions come every year around December 1st. That is the lessen you learned. We all learned this one way or the other. Join the club.0 -

With all due respect I think you are missing my point. You mention grace period, I am saying that was not made clear to me as a customer. I did not blindly upgrade, as stated above I did my research and I saw their policy ( please read the link I posted earlier) no where does it mention grace period. I also noticed they released other version around November that's why I decided to upgrade based on that. Do you think it make sense for me to pay another upgrade fee for not waiting 17 more days if they had made it clear.
Yes it's a marketing trick but definitely a misleading one. I am sure you would not want to be treated unfairly and that's my point. Have I learn my lesson? Yes. Have I lost a lot of respect for phase one? yes I have, period.0 -

Believe me when I say that I'm very sorry for you 'cause I've felt the same frustration in the past but honestly the link doesn't say in a "reasonable time frame" but exactly "just before a new version of the software was released". Just before. What does it mean just before? You said you bought it 17 days before October 23, so on October 6. Capture One 20 has been released on December 4. As such you purchased it almost exactly 2 months before CO20 release. Are 2 months a reasonable time frame? Are 2 months "just before" for you? What happened is a pity but they gave more than one month of grace period this year and they have to set a date for it to start. It was October 23. I mean, if they give you CO20 for free, then who have bought CO12 on October 5 would want the same 'cause It's only one day before you. Consequently who bought it on October 4 would pretend it too and so on until we arrive to January.
I asked you if you purchased on offer. If you received an email I think you did and you saved some money. Phase One offers many promotions during the year. Some are better than others. You can't expect a company to tell you "here's a promotion but wait for the next that will be better". If you pre-ordered CO20 during Black Friday you paid it less than who pre-ordered in November after receiving an email. It was frustrating but these are Phase One's policies and we cannot change them. I mean, we all had to learn this lesson soon or later as Paul said.0 -

ClauS thank you, at least you get part of what I am trying to say. I am not here to change their policy they can set how many days they want for upgrades but just let the consumer know about it. I did not know about until I opened up a case with them and also read it here in the forum and like I have said earlier we are talking about more days 17 days not two months because they granted those on October 23rd. They need to be more transparent, I am coming from Adobe and for new customers like me who do not know much about phase one transparency is important not marketing tricks to frustrate the consumer.0 -

Sorry, I don't know your name, I get your point but you said you didn't know Phase One. We know (and now you know it) that they write on products purchase page when you're in grace period. If this is not transparency, I don't know what it should be, even though you're right that they could update that statement to make it even clearer. But however you put it, October 23rd was not Capture One 20 release date, which is what policies clearly refer about. It was the grace period starting date and unfortunately you were out of it. ☹️
We all know (or we had to know somehow) they offer promotions on a regular basis but it's not reasonable to expect they tell us what and when or they'd better activate purchases only in promotion periods.
You go to a store to buy a new phone at an already compelling price. Two weeks later it's on sale at half prize. Can you blame them for they didn't say "this phone is going on offer in a few days"? No company will ever tell you when they're going to make a better promotion and they won't invite you to wait for it either. It's up to you, in that particular moment, to be ok with the price you're asked for and it's your choice when to buy. It's frustrating, I know, but I don't think you go back to the store pretending half of your money back for a few days.
What is not clear to me yet is what you payed for the upgrade. I mean if you paid full upgrade price or how much of a discount you were offered. However, on the bright side, Capture One is a powerful converter. Enjoy it and take advantage of future promotions to "recover" your money.0 -

Just so you know most stores will honor and give you a discount if you buy something and a few days later they put it on sale. You are missing my point but its okay no need to keep stretching this out, like you said I have learn how misleading phaseone can be with their marketing. So I will skip capture 20 and wait December 2020 for the next one 😊 Have a wonderful day!0 -

Not in my country. As for the rest, I'm not missing your point, I just don't agree with it. Nothing personal, just my point of view. I wish you to have better luck and be satisfied next time and happy holidays too!0
