Look in the Preferences - General tab, and disable "Automatically show window" under "Activities."

It's an extra step, but you can erase the part of the gradient that you don't want.

I'm working from memory here, but I think you need to set the profile to generic. You might then be able to copy/apply that adjustment to the other photos.
