Capture One Pro (16.3) is out now – and we want to thank you...
We are delighted to announce the release of Capture One Pro (16.3) – this is a feature release and will require you to have a subscription, or a perpetual license that was purchased on or after September 26th.
We want to make new license purchases as cheap as possible for our loyal customers, so it's worth checking out the details of the Loyalty Program to ensure that you are paying as little as possible for your perpetual license. We're proud to provide the option to purchase a perpetual license and will continue to do so.
Release notes for Capture One Pro (16.3)
Sign-up to our livestream this afternoon (17:30 CEST) to see 16.3 in action.
One of the many features included in this release is AI Masking – something that has been frequently requested in the community for a while now. It makes us incredibly proud to be able to deliver a major feature like this based upon your feedback and needs as Capture One users.
Also included in this release, as a result of direct contributions from the community are:
- Ability to duplicate a layer
- Keyboard shortcut for toggling the Black & White tool
- Capture One Live comments in Capture One Pro
- Notifications about reviewer activity in Capture One Live
- Added keyboard shortcut to reset crop
- Speed edit reset
- Improved Luma Range window interaction
(coming in a service release, didn't quite make it into 16.3)
I'll use this as an opportunity to make everybody aware that if there is something that does not exist in Capture One, then we are completely open to implementing it.
Request a new feature, or improvement to Capture One by going to Improve Capture One Pro, clicking "New Post" and using the pre-filled template to let us know your thoughts and ideas.
The next headline feature of Capture One could easily come from one of your suggestions. Even if it's not a fancy idea, it could be something small that makes a big difference to other users.
Lastly and most importantly, thank you for all of the incredibly helpful feedback and the influence you have had on the work we do at Capture One. Let's keep this going.
Enjoy the new release and speak soon! :)

I am having problems with the installation of Capture One 16.3. I purchased a license for Capture One 16.3. When I install the update and check the version of the software, it is telling me that it is the old version, 16.2.5.9.
Any help or suggestion will be appreciated.

It is written above that if you want to get a license for version 16.3, then you need to pay for it starting October 26, 2023. Did you see information about this in the post above?

I am still stuck in the previous software lingo. I've been using C1PRO since version 3.7.8 years ago circa 2008 and have since upgraded to: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
I stopped at 12 and eventually upgraded to 22.
Is 16.3 (Version 23) release today a "major upgrade" as if going from 3 to 4 and from 4 to 5? You mentioned in the post that people perpetual license people would need to buy this, if they want to have these features included in 16.3.
I still have the loyalty coupon that will expire in February 2024. I would like to hold it out until then and use it just before it will expire.

16.3 is a major upgrade. In the old world today’s release would be a Capture One 24. I can’t explain why they went with the version numbering convention they selected but 16.1, 16.2, 16.3, are all major releases. Within a release are 16.1.1, 16.1.2, 16.1,3, etc.
If you buy 16.3 today, you’ll get any 16.3.x update included down the line but you won’t get a 16.4 or 17 release. That would require a new perpetual license.

I have a current subscription. My current version is 16.2.5.9 and the download I get is 16.3.076 but when I do an install and restart the program it still shows version 16.2.5.9. I really can't figure out what I'm doing wrong as this is the first time I've had a problem doing an upgrade. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

When I installed 16.3 on my Mac, I got a new full install. The previous 16.2.x and a new 16.3.x. I had to manually delete the 16.2.x install.
Maybe check to see if you have 2 installs and you’re opening the older version by default.
NOTE: It really help members here on the boards if you mention your operating system. Troubleshooting Mac and Windows is different.

On my Windows PC the same, 16.3 version installed without deleting the previous one.

Thanks Brian, I'll give that a try. I'm on a Mac.

Thanks all for the prompt and helpful responses, that worked.

Thanks for the clarification Brian Jordan. Will you or someone at C1PRO consider implementation this as some kind of a P.S. or PSA for those of us who might not be evident of this release? All of us know about "service or point-updates" in the software language in the context of upgrades.
I also think this kind of question (if not already) could be part of a FAQ for those of us who are only interested in Perpetual Licenses?

Ronald, I’m a community mod. No affiliation with Capture One other than that they gave me a nice tag and the ability to hide posts with spam links.

Brian, can I pay today for a new license to activate version 16.3 on my computer?
From what number will the purchased key activate version 16.3?0 -
If you buy the license today you’ll get the current 16.3 release. Actually, I think it’s 16.3.076. Going forward, you will be able to activate any 16.3.xxx releases with that activation key. You will not, however, be able to install any release 16.4 or above without an additional purchase. Apologies but I don’t understand your second question.

Thank you. That's what I wanted to know. I'll pay today.

Ronald Tan (and anyone confused by the naming change) you should basically look at this release as the new version of Capture One (Capture One 24, if you like) - it's just that we have moved away from the 22/23 naming convention and will simply be calling it "Capture One Pro" followed by the version number.

I have updated the release notes to reflect the naming convention change.

I can't copy/paste AI Masks, batch editing only works creating a new style. Anybody else with that issue?
David told yesterday on streaming that it's possible to copy/paste edit with AI mask

On my Windows PC the same, 16.3 version installed without deleting the previous one.
The same here as well (w11)
I wonder if I should uninstall v.16.2.5 through Windows Settings, or how to do it without deleting my preferences?
Someone from CO to clarify this, please.0 -
Waldo There's no need for you to remove old versions unless you want to. Having 16.2.5 installed alongside 16.3 will have no impact on performance.
Enric Fradera Calonge You can copy and apply masks that have been generated by AI, but they will not recalculate. However, they will recalculate if you are using a Style that has been made using an AI mask.

Jack W Nice Jack, thanks for your answer! Anyway I hope that this feature will be implemented on next versions :)

It makes sense to drop the version numbering (22, 23, 24) from your name because of your push towards a subscription service. There no longer is a distinction in versions towards the subscribers, they always receive the latest version of the 'service'.
It doesn't make sense how you treat the internal software versioning however. This causes confusion for those customers not picking your subscription option (for whatever reason). Your three part version number (16.2.5) is an obvious example of semantic versioning. Here 16 is the major, 2 the minor and 5 the patch.
You call this a major release, then why not number it 17.0? Immediately clear to those that bought a perpetual license somewhere during 16.x.x that this is not included in their license apart from some last month(s) discretion on your side.

But, if I would wish to delete the previous version (I will no use it anymore), how should I proceed?
Thank you!

I am having issues where i downloaded C1 new 16.3 and also finally updated my intel iMac to Sonoma except that it was 14.1 and now when I use C1 it crashes my iMac to the point where it reboots itself and restarts and stays on that cycle of reboot and restart until I select to not open previous applications that were open while system crashed. Anybody else having the same issue?

This is why Capture One recommends never upgrading to a version of macOS that they have not certified.

VaL Hey, Val (sorry. autocorrect previously). You've posted to a community board. Everyone here is a user like you. I don't think you'll find anyone here able to help with this specific issue. If you haven't already, I suggest you open a support ticket here: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. Scroll down a bit to the Still Need Help? Reach out to us section. Select Report a bug or a crash from the dropdown. Answer any questions with as much detail as possible.
Good luck.

thanks Brian. I’m waiting to hear back from the ticket I did. No word back yet. That’s why I figure I would try out community. I rolled the dice and got brave. I downloaded the new versions of C1 and Mac OS system at the same time since Mac OS.

Yeah, that can bite you in the behind. I think your best bet is to download 16.2.5, reinstall, and get your photos out to your clients. There's some other issues with exporting images to iCloud folders. Apps other than Capture One seem to be affected so it looks (to me) like it's an Apple issue. Might want to just sit tight on 16.2.5 until all that get sorted. Look over at the Known Issues thread and follow it. There'll be an update there when it all gets sorted. In the meantime, I have every confidence Capture One tech support will get you sorted but with a new release and all they'll take some time to get to you.
