    Yes, sure.

    Not "within that library" though.

    You can create any folder structure on the file system on your external harddrive, or use the one you have already, then create a catalog in C1, open it and import the images from their top-most folder. Don't import them "Into" the catalog (which would actually make copies and put them in one big catalog folder), this is not suitable for a folder structure. "Add" them to the catalog instead.

    It is advisable to have the catalog stored on your internal drive, mainly for performance reasons, but you can also store it on your external drive where your image are.

    btw, there is a way to migrate you images from LR to C1, in case you finally want to do that, but don't ask me how as I have never done this.
