Digital Asset Management System for shared use with capture one
Hi all,
I would be happy to hear your experiences with image management and Capture One.
I have been using C1 for my Fuji RAW files for several years and I am enthusiastic about RAW development with C1.
Unfortunately, I find the image management options of C1 to be exactly the opposite.
I currently use PhotoSupreme for administration and C1 for RAW development.
However, Photosupreme is not able to display the images from my C1 catalogs in terms of cropping and, if necessary, rough editing.
You can see the unedited RAW file.
Question: Is there a digital asset management software that can read the C1 catalog and display the images reasonably well?
What is your solution for image management?

Cyme's Peakto can import Capture One catalogues. It still has a few limitations which the company is working on sorting out.

Thank's for that advice, but if forgot to mention that I'm using a windows computer. So sad, but I understood that this softwre is for mac only...

Oh, I see. I don't know of any other software that will show edits and variants.

Many of the DAM softwares (like PhotoSupreme) can stack a raw and a jpg file and can show you the jpg image as the representative of the stack.
I think PhotoSupreme can do so too, if configured.
In that case you can define an export recipe in C1 which exports a jpg file in the same folder as the raw file, and if you want a fast export you can use the Quickproof recipe which exports the preview of C1.
To edit several raw files from a DAM in C1 you could use a C1 Session and drag&drop the raw files from the DAM to a session album. That means you can search over your complete DAM catalog e.g. "all images with Jane since 2012" and "send" them to a C1 session album for editing, all at once.
This requires that all your images are edited as a session, i.e. have your adjustments in the typical session subfolder "CaptureOne" of each image folder. I came from a catalog too and once done the effort to export the original images (so the raw files) "including adjustments" so that I can use a session to edit them.
The problem with the Windows version is that they killed this drag&drop functionality in one of the versions later than 15.2 and though I created a bug report they refuse to fix it as there are not enough users complaining. (I believe they do not have sufficient number of developers, because that costs their money, and not enough experienced developers because they introduced a lot of regression defects)

First off, my view is that C1 is ok at DAM - well, for my workflow - but I would like to see improvements. I have been using keywording as a workaround for most constraints I encounter but keywording is a labour intensive and error-prone approach. I do use C1 as my primary/source DAM repository as experience has shown DAM gets messy and starts to fail quickly once 'knowledge' gets fragmented across different software. I do also use PhotoSupreme as a separate repository for all 'final' photos that become sellable prints however. But I find its user interface a little 'clunky' and would prefer to do it all in C1.
I was a software developer in a previous life so a couple of years ago I did look briefly at creating a DAM application that interfaced with C1 Catalogue's but after reviewing the C1 SDK/API's I concluded it didn't provide the access that I'd need so the idea was abandoned.
The DAM feature I'd most like to see in C1 is recorded on the 'Improve Capture One' site as FR-I-1272. It describes a need to record the derivation of images. i.e. Variant image B is a child of Variant A etc. The link to that request is here: https://captureone.ideas.aha.io/ideas/FR-I-1272. I feel that DAM needs to be in one place, either in C1 as that is closely integrated with the images and edits (my preference) or in a separate application entirely. Unfortunately I've found no other application that will integrate sufficiently well with C1 Catalogs.

I voted for your request. This would be very helpful!I'm currently solving this by renameing the files.
A small example:
_DSF3315.RAF, _DSF3316.RAF and _DSF3317.RAF are three Images from an exposure bracketing.
I wrote a small script that can read the exif data while moving them from card to disk. While this is done, the files are renamed accoring to what the exif data looks like.
Eg. 20240525_F4_3315-H1.RAF, 20240525_F4_3315-H2.RAF, 20240525_F4_3315-H3.RAF
So, all Files are getting the Numbercounter of the first related file and an extension -H1, -H2, -H3.
This way it is clear, that -H1 is the underexposed, -H2 the normal exposed and -H3 the overexposed one.
When they are processed the resulting HDR-File is named 20240525_F4_3315=HDR.JPEG
If there is further postprocessing, the file is named 20240525_F4_3315=HDR-NR.JPEG for Noise Reduction with PhotoAI or 20240525_F4_3315=HDR-NR-WB.JPEG for an additional Black colored Watermark, etc.
All files stay with the same filename for the first 16 digits and all following information are sperated in the correct development order by "-", "=" or "~".

Thanks for the vote! Unfortunately using filenames in that way doesn't work for me. :-)
For anyone who is interested to use hierarchical keywords to assist with DAM in C1 I've tidied the list I use and uploaded it to Dropbox. It can be imported directly into C1 using the 'Keyword Library' tool. If I knew how to attach it to this post I would. There is a 'Grouping' hierarchy that allows the specification of image derivation, focus stacks, exposure stacks and pano stacks. Link below.
