35mm negative film scans and conversation
Hi all,
I was wondering what scanners are you using to convert 35mm film negatives into digital format and can you use CO to post process wothout any other software.
Actaully, can I buy a negative film scanner, scan my negatives into some jpeg or tiff file and convert them to positive images with CO? My post process will be minimal, just some exposures.
Many thanks,
Fatih

There are not many dedicated film scanners still available. One of the few is . I have the SE version, it is ok but is not nearly as good as my old Nikon scanner which succumbed to anno domini. Theplustek scanners come with silverfast software which does all the neccessary correction for colour negative masks and inversion etc 0 -
One of the pitfalls that many film scanning users encounter with Capture One is that only RGB JPG and TIF files are supported. If you're scanning b/w film, be sure your output file from the scanning software is in RGB and not a greyscale profile. 0 -

Yes, you can convert the negative to positive by reversing either the curve or levels sliders (drag the black point to white and the white point to black). One downside to this is that after you invert the curve or levels some of the other tools will work in reverse. For example raising the exposure will darken the image.0 -
I'm using Nikon Cool Scan 9000 with VueScan and to scanned tiff I'm adding basic exposure information (using ExifTools) before importing to C1. 0 -
I have used dedicated film scanners. Most of them have very shallow DOF.
Now I use an old Bowen's illumnitran film duping station as a light source, with an old copy stand, a D800, micro lens, zigaligned to the copy board with the help of a geared head.
Then I can utilize Capture One's tools with a Raw workflow. The only issue is that film grain is a bit pronounced but the film grain tool in CO is very helpful.0
