Noise Reduction seems to be rather good. And that makes for enhanced use of several other tools.

I think there is actually a lot more to the effectiveness of this release than the list of changes would seem to suggest.

How do we go from version 12 to 20? I just got 12 last year, do I need to buy 20? What happened to version 13? Did we just jump from 12 to 20 skipping versions 13-19?

Did you pre-order? If you pre-ordered, you still need to 'buy' an upgrade. Enter the pre-order code on the Fastspring order confirmation as a coupon code and your order total will go to 0. Complete the order and you'll receive the actual license code.

They might have made things easier by telling us... Anyway, this was the only solution I could think of to exactly the same problem I encountered.

Here is some info about. But it looks like, this will change my perpetual licence into an annual subscription - with no payment required for the first year.... ????

    https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004099198-Using-your-pre-order-code-without-owning-a-Capture-One-12-license

Is this means, there will be no more perpetual option???? Only subscription like in Adobe??

    Ah, right. Thanks for that!

Guys, you're looking at "Using your pre-order code without owning a Capture One 12 license". One item below is for those owning a C1 12 license. We're good:

This LicenceKey from my preorder ( I have 12 version ) doesn't work with this option.
It works when You put it here:https://phaseone.onfastspring.com/pre-order-sub/c1-sub-annual-prepaid-pre-order

And this will convert my perpetual to annual... Every year 220 Euro.

    Hi all,

Just wanted to say that following the indication found here, as pointed out by Emile:

    https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004099138-How-to-use-your-Capture-One-20-pre-order-code

it worked perfectly. I had a perpetual license, I pre-ordered the perpetual license, and I was able to upgrade to the perpetual license.

Capture One 12 automatically got deactivated. Is that normal?

Don't know if it's normal, but I can say that mine has deactivated too - and it's saying that my Capture One 12 licence is invalid.

You can rely on Phase One to make things more messy and complex than they need to be...

🤭 🤓 😡 Be careful - after upgrading to Capture One 20, my CO 12 "perpetual" license was disabled! I sent a support ticket. In all my years, a prior SW version never stopped working after an upgrade. If this stands, it would force everyone I work with to upgrade, since CO12 projects auto convert to CO20 when opened.

Use the same license key for v12 that you use for v20 and you should be fine.

Not really logical, but you're right, Emile.

I stand by my opinion of Phase One's insistence on making things unnecessarily difficult for users...

I'm just guessing that if you want to keep on using all your v12 licenses, you need to buy a completely new license key for v20 instead of upgrading the old one. In a way it makes sense, but I mostly agree with you. The process of upgrading a pre-order to a new license key leaves something to be desired too...

I have received an email saying .... as I have a subscription plan I am entitled to the latest upgrades etc.
However, I have downloaded C20 and after inputting my V12 licence code, it is saying my code has been disabled.

PROBLEM SOLVED. I was trying to input an old key, however that was the only one on my order history. Strange!

Get anybody shed some light on this please?

Perpetual means you own the version you bought outright and you can continue to use it as long as you like without paying any more fees. When a new version comes out, v20, you have to pay to upgrade to it.

... but you don't have to upgrade to v20 at all - you can continue to use v12 for ever if you want.

This has been the case for several releases.

The reason is simple if a little unusual.

The latest key allows you to run any older versions you stiull have installed - back to V5 as I recall. Maybe V4.

However as the old licence key has been replaced after you upgrade and get a new license key you just need to re-activate using the new key - assuming that you wish to do that an not immediately move to the newly released version.

Perhaps a slightly odd situation but entirely logical and potentially easier, for those who wish to retain the use of older versions, than having to keep track of multiple per version keys.

    HTH.

All well and good, Grant - once you're familiar with this (AFAIK) unique approach to licence management - but where is it documented?

I'd expect this to be writ large and prominently on Captureone.com somewhere.

Also, in the release announcement email for those who pre-ordered, is this.

Your Capture One 20 is waiting for you

You have a pre-order of Capture One 20. Click on the link below to access the upgrade store and use your pre-order code at checkout (the code appears as license key in your order confirmation email).

Now I grant you that the wording could be a little clearer and the process, though designed to be as simple as possible on user by user/license by license basis, perhaps tries to take away too much of the usual challenge and people may not be expecting that nor welcome it. But in fact it is providing the information required - just not, perhaps, in the way that we might expect.

I think people (I include myself) are so used to complexity ((of a degree related to the possible complexity that could be designed into a process no matter how simple) that they find it difficult to accept simplicity for what it is.

Perhaps we may learn something philosophical about communication (or the difficulties of it despite the apparent recent expansion in communication potential) in the modern world.

A few odd things with Capture One 20:

    1. It is not clear how the C1 20 upgrade is validated. I was not asked for the activation key after I opened the new installation of the C1 20 upgrade. In the past, it always Asked if this was a trial version, or a purchase and if the latter, required the key and and a logon to the activation web site, which is still required to reactivate C1 12 after installing C1 20.

    2. I use catalogs. After quitting C1 20, reopening it creates and opens a blank catalog named Capture One Catalog located in the Users/Pictures folder, not the Recents window. If the new blank catalog is closed, the Recents window can be seen under it. If the catalog is closed, but C1 20 is not quit, the Recents folder will be displayed when clicking on the C1 20 icon. If the new blank Capture One Catalog file is removed and C1 20 is quit and reopened, C1 20 will again create another blank catalog named Capture One Catalog and open it instead of displaying the Recents folder. This is annoying.

    3. If Time Machine is backing up when clicking on All Images, after the initial installation, C1 20 can become unresponsive until the backup finishes. In my case, I had deleted a number of files and added C1 20, and even without C1 running, Time Machine took 30 min to prepare the backup and was a big resource hog. I have not tested this when Time Machine is backing up after the initial installation.

    4. Why are we having to discuss C1 20 on the C1 12 Forum? In the past, the rollout was always accompanied by a new Forum location for the new version.
