Import Images - Exclude Duplicates - Shocking performance
Hello,
I'm a casual user of Capture One Pro (12.0.3.22) and just attempted to import some images from my SD card with the "Exclude Duplicates" option turned on. Soon after trying that I realized that this leads to shocking performance/inevitable hang and crash.
Currently I'm getting 1 image added to "Exclude Duplicates (X)" per 30-90 seconds which is shocking. All images imported on a dedicated Capture One drive. Latest Windows 10 OS with high end hardware. Images imported from SD card with 150 images in total. All images imported with default file names.
What makes zero sense is that this is an extremely basic operation - I would assume a simple loop that checks for file names using existing naming template.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I agree the performance of exclude duplicates is totally unacceptable, I ensure the function is not ticked and select new files manually - much faster! I presume this is a known problem as it has been around for quite a few years.

It's a bit dumbfounding that this is such a problem. It's so slow as to be almost unusable. Overall, Capture One is really fast. Much faster than Lightroom. But in this one area it's orders of magnitude slower than Lightroom. I think it's because Capture One is comparing a bunch of extra stuff that, as far as I can see, is entirely unnecessary. A file name compare would be sufficient.

I would love to hear at least brief explanation for such slow performance of the import filtering from devs here. The duplicates are clearly calculated one at the time. No matter if you first load all photos and then filter or you filter them as they are being added. It both will be slow. I don't get it why it is still an issue in 2022 version.
To my understanding, there's already a list of all the images for the import in the dialogue. And there's also a list of images already existing in the catalogue or current album. Comparing two lists and excluding duplicates should be a single click operation, that may take a couple of seconds. Instead we need to wait as the app meticulously compare each image with the database. If there's thousands photos, this may take hours just for the import.
This should have been addressed years ago. Maybe I miss some hidden settings somewhere?

I find that it if I am importing from a card that already has older images on it, it is much quicker to use the Filter tool that is now available in the Import panel. So I just filter on today's date, and then just import the ones from that date.

Ian Wilson that could be a usable workaround in some situations but certainly not all. And, really, this shouldn't be a problem at all.
