Capture One Pro 20 Software Versions?
Hello.
Last month I purchased Capture One Pro 20 for Windows (perpetual version) and I have a couple of questions regarding software versions.
The file I downloaded when I purchased the software was: CaptureOne20.Win.20.0.4.exe (142,293 KB).
The file I downloaded for the recent update was: CaptureOne20.Win.13.1.0.exe (479,501 KB).
I'm wondering if I downloaded the correct versions of software due to the following:
- I understand they are both for Capture One 20, but why is the upgrade going backwards in software versions?
- I understand extra features and functionality will take more code which translates into a larger executable file. But the update is over three times the size of the original version I purchased so did I download the correct update file?
I haven't installed the new update as I'm concerned I may not have obtained the correct file and I don't want to run into installation problems or find out I haven't been running the latest software.
Can anyone shed some light on how this works and if I have the correct software?
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Garry

First: According to your description you have the right downloads. Unfortunately Phase One causes unnecessary confusion with its conflicting version numbers. Until v12 the numbers were simply incremented like most other manufacturers do. But with the actual version 13 they broke this pattern and will probably name future versions of Capture One with its publishing year, hence the version number 20, which internally runs under 13.x.x. and the update file obviously got this number again, So 13.1 = 20.1. Everything clear? :-)
Only Phase One can say why this update is so much bigger, but it is at least much bigger because it contains a sample catalog DB which alone is more than 300 MB in size. But you can delete this sample catalog after installation if you don't want to play around with it

Adobe also muddied the version number waters with the release of the Photoshop CS series. CS was actually version 8 up through CS 6 which was version 13. I gave up trying to keep track after that.

Hi Okular,
Thank you for your quick response. Your explanation was great especially since I didn't know the update contained a sample catalog DB that is over 300 MB.
Good to know.
Thank you.
