Removing a variant from an album
I created a clone variant and moved it to an album. C1 move the original and variant to the album. I just wanted the variant.
1. I understand why CO would move both images to the album. Is there a way to prevent this just bringing the selected image over. Should I be using something other than an album if I want do this?
2. When I right click on either or both variants in the album, there is no option to 'Delete from album'. Just delete. When I select Delete, CO deletes the image from the catalog, at least I can't find it anywhere. Is there a way to remove variants from an album?
Thanks.

Not albums but smart albums let you have one of the multiple variants in that album. Note that when you work with variants, there is no original and variant. There are all variants of the same capture.
When you delete an image or variant from an album, it is not removed from the catalog but only from that album. You can always find the image from the All Images collection (via search or browsing manually).
When you delete an image from a smart album, it is moved to the trash. Once you clear the trash, it is totally removed from your catalog. Note that you should get a warning in this case.

I would not expect the variant to be deleted however when in the album, right clicking on the image show Delete and not Delete from Album.
After deleting the image I have looked under all images ensuring there is no active search and that image is no where to be found. If I enter the filename in the search bar only one image appears.
Thanks,
Michael

There is an article about this; also note the comments below the article which indicate you are not the only one with this problem.

Thanks for pointing that out. I saw the article but not the comments.

This is still an issue in Capture One Pro 21 (14.1.0.220). Like Michael said, I experience the same issue:
- I add an image to an new album
- In the folder, for that image, I create one or more variants.
- When I go back to the newly created album, I see all the created variants. I do not expect this to happen because I did not add these variants to the album.
- I delete the added variants from the album.
- I go back to the folder of the image and all the variants that I removed from the album are also disappeared from the folder. There is no option to remove a variant/image from an album. Only the Delete. When I look in the Trash, the variants that I removed from the album are also not there!!! When did they go???
This is very strange behaviour and not the what I expected of an album. In the Capture One 21 Online Help - Album folders, there is no mention of this behaviour. So, this looks like a bug.

Dennis,
What you describe is actually how it is designed, how odd that perhaps may seem. I am not sure you have read the entire thread as there is some explanation about how variants work in Capture One.
One thing is that they always show up together, in any collection or folder. The only exception is a smart album.
Another thing is that when you have multiple variants (new/clone), they will not end up in the trash bin when deleting, until you delete the last variants, being the actual image file.

Hi Paul,
This design behavior of how an album handles variants is not correct and frustrates organization of photo variants.
I have a series of photos of different types and formats that are spread across my library. For this serie I want to create variants that are optimized for viewing on a digital picture frame and place them in an album. For the same serie I want to create variants that are optimized for printing and place them in another album. Between the series there are adjustments like ratio, exposure, color, etc.
The album behavior as designed by Capture One resulting in both albums having both variants. A smart album makes it more complex because I use the star and color rating for a different purpose. Manually dropping in an album is the easiest and fastest way to organize these variants. It also prevents the unwanted adding/removing variants compared to a smart album.
Before using Capture One, I used Lightroom. Lightroom handles organization of these variants the correct way. I hope the Capture One team will agree with me that the current design choice for this album behavior has to be corrected.

Dennis,
I think your best option would be to manage the finished output files rather than the source file conversions.
The results can be the same but working with a relational database is not always a comfortable activity for everyone and C1, unlike Adobe, does not have an entire suite of graphics manipulation products from which it can adopt and share certain aspects of functionality across different product platforms.

Hi SFA,
Your reply confirms my point.
Albums in Capture One are created for the user to organise variants regardless of it is physical location. I say variants and not photos because an album must handle a variant as an individual separate photo, no matter the source of the variant. The soul purpose of variants are to create different adjustments that results in different results. Grouping versions at folder level is correct, but not in an album.
Any processing can be done outside Capture One. But Capture One has the functionality to create different results inside the application. Why all the effort to have an extra step outside Capture One which includes loosing the adjustments made outside. Implementing correct variant handling in an album will improve an already very good product.
