A single (universal) keyboard shortcut to select the layer-type-dependent brush
ImplementedI often have the hand tool selected, or another tool, and not any brush or eraser, when I browse through my layers.
Then I suddenly decide to add something to an existing mask.
The easiest way to change the hand tool to the respective brush, depending on layer type, is hitting a key on the keyboard, and always the same key, regardless of which layer (type) is selected.
My proposal is to allow the user to activate the brush with a layer-context-sensitive (universal) keyboard shortcut.
Note, this is not a universal brush, but a universal shortcut to select one of the three relevant brushes intelligently.
One key for all. Simple and fast, no need to remember all these different shortcuts for Heal, Clone and Adjustment brush.
Up until v13.0 this was "B". Starting from v13.1.0 and still in v13.1.1 this universal shortcut is lost.
C1 could keep the new shortcuts for the Heal, Clone and Adjustment brushes (which I could delete in the keyboard shortcut preferences, I hope) and add a new universal shortcut to select the layer-type-dependent brush, e.g. "U", or any other non-used key (which I ultimately would want to configure to "B").
- Keep the v13.1 shortcuts for the Heal, Clone and Adjustment brushes
- Add a new shortcut (let's say "U") as an intelligent brush selector
- If you have currently the hand tool, the eraser tool, or any other tool:
- If an Adjustment layer is selected, pressing U would select the adjustment brush (same as B).
- If a Heal or Clone layer is selected, pressing U would select the respective Heal or Clone brush
- If the background layer is selected, pressing U should activate the adjustment brush
This would also bring back the functionality to switch between normal brushing (on any of the three layer types) and erasing by using just two keyboard shortcuts.

I support the request.
I note, though, that the sentence
"Note, this is not a universal brush, but a universal shortcut to select one of the three relevant brushes intelligently."
might indicate a misunderstanding of the "Universal Brush" request. The latter request never aimed at anything else but the effect you are describing. As a matter of fact, a "universal shortcut" technically does not make sense, as no single shortcut can refer to a multitude of tools (in the way intended, of course there are the "use Shift to cycle" shortcuts). You are really proposing a shortcut to a single (universal) brush tool that always implies "auto-brush-selection".
Anyway, I hope it is clear what is needed; just wondered why people seem to misunderstand the "Universal Brush" request and thought it might be good to elaborate in case the developers misunderstood the request as well.
N.B., one such misunderstanding that specifically asked for "not considering a universal brush" may have resulted in the half-baked improvement that is available in 13.1.1. The 13.1.1 improvement is much welcome, but not enough to allow me to update C1 on my editing machine.Anyhow, between the "Universal Brush" and the "Autoselect the correct brush type when selecting a layer" there has been some good support for the feature you are requesting, and of course, in my view, votes for "Further improve multiple brush design (cf. universal brush, brush auto-selection)" should also be considered when judging the popularity of this request.
