Folder View annoyances

At the top right of the Library tool, hit the ellipse button to give a dropdown. There you can uncheck Show Folder Hierarchy, hiding any intermediate parent folders that you haven't imported into the catalog.

Unfortunately that's not an acceptable solution. I need to see the years. It's worse if I have to scroll one huge column of 300 folders.

Like I said, C1 should use the added folder as the root. If the user would have wanted to see the root drive he would have added the root drive himself to begin with.

One wonders why you need to see the years when there are other ways of selecting by year.

That said one of the other ways would be to create a smart album or just use the filters to do the work for you.

Or add the year to the name of the folder?

I don't want to see the whole year, I want to expand it! I want to see the shots by month for that year. A smart-album will show me all pictures of a given year in a single window. I want to select my month.

Adding the year to the name of the album defeats the purpose of having a hierarchy. I'll see the year but I'll still have a humongous list to scroll and it'll get worse with years.

Like I said, if I wanted to see the root drive I would have added that. What's the point of asking me what I want if you're gonna show me all parents anyway. And browsing folders recursively would help a lot too. No more smart-albums for years. Just click the parent year folder and voila!

So you just want to see all the images for a particular year?

If you are relying on the EXIF information in the image files for the date data check out the filters that are set up by default. In the Library tool (or as a floating tool) using sessions.I assume much the same using Catalogues.

One of them is by dates starting with year.

You can select multiple filters in the tool and a search at the same time.

Powerful and independent of any folder hierarchy one might like to use for other purposes.

    HTH.

Agree with the op, all we want is to be able to browse folders at different levels in the hierarchy in the same way as in Lightroom.

@SFA Nope, not a good solution.

It just makes it even worse than flattening the hierarchy. Now a whole panel's height shows me 4 months only (and by day, I want to select my month folder). And as previously mentioned, C1 doesn't remember what's expanded. So every time I open the application, the Filters panel is expanded by default and shows me a 500 pages long list of dates. To fix that other annoyance I hid the date filter altogether.

Did you try Search alongside the filter?

Search for 2017 and the list of dates will be restricted to 2017.

Smart Album for 2017 selected, filter for the month you want and you will only see the days in that month.

Tick the count box for year or month or day and only the related images will appear.

    Multiple selection options also possible.

I'm sure other will have their own solutions to offer you.

But I don't want to see days, I want to see months only.

To me these are all semi-complicated solutions to a very simple problem. I shouldn't have to juggle with filters when all is really needed is a recursive view in folders. And that would not even be something you toggle like filters. It's just there!

I'm grateful for all the solutions you're giving me but I get the feeling that you don't think my wishes are warranted. That I should just stick with what's available.

Filters have their uses but this shouldn't be one of them. The folders panel exists for a reason and it's usefulness should be expanded beyond it's current very limited and rigid state. There's a lot of different ways to manage your photos and some methods will appeal to a certain group of people and less to others. It all depends on how your structure was prior to importing into C1.
