Importing LR Catalog

Well its time to make a full go of C1. I wanted to import my LR Catalog and it keeps crashing, which brought up a few more questions.

Can C1 handle a catalog with nearly 200k files?
Can C1 actually import that? If so, how without crashing

Noticed on a smaller test import that the C1 catalog was HUGE compared to LR. My test resulted in a C1 catalog of 9gb. My entire 200k image catalog in LR is only 5gb. Is that right? Looking in the C1 catalog file I see that the cache folder is whats eating up all the space. Is there a way to manage that? This could be a total deal breaker for me.

    With V9 I used to work with catalogs somewhere in range of 25 to 30k images. My original 100k+ catalogs were to large to be handled properly with lots of crashes and spinning balls. Also the conversion process from Aperture did not work with catalog sizes of 10k and above.

    V10 is different as it has, at least on my and several other people's computers an issue with "larger" sized catalogs, i.e. gets extremely slow. Here my absolute limit is 4000 images and I try staying below 1000 images / cat if I can. Your limits might vary depending on file size (36 MP NEF for me), computer (i7 iMAC) and it seems that not all people see all V10 speed issues.

    The easiest way to figure it out: Import 20k RAW images into V10 from disk not from Lightroom, disable all kind of adjustment in import dialog, leave them where they are, i.e. referenced, wait for preview generation (takes several hours), select all images and close the catalog. Then reopen it again. If this takes a minute or longer you are likely to see at least some speed issues.

    I imported my Lightroom catalog about 2 years ago (COP v8), with 15000 files at this time. It worked well, except that I had to wait for a full night for all previews to be created.
    When I try to make a query with the filter (text, stars, colors,...), it took about 5 seconds to display all images with version 9, and it takes about 30 seconds with version 10. Phase One is aware of that, and they are working hard on this issue. Nobody knows when it will be solved.
    My referenced catalog (today 18000 images) takes about 32 GB, mostly previews (31 GB !!), but I work with rather large size previews as I have a MBP Retina 15".
    With more than 200k images, I would suggest C1 catalog issues to be solved before switching, or using C1 in session mode with a dedicated catalog software, such as Media Pro, Photo Mechanics, or Photo Supreme.

    Thanks for the great feedback.

    Will do more testing.

    Wish the move from a fully loaded LR workflow to C1 was more efficient. Converting PDF,s weak DNG support and large catalog performance issues just makes it so much more challenging to switch. Even the latest On1 RAW has full PSD and DNG support.

    Capture One could totally dominate the market with a few improvements. People are fed up with Lightroom.

    200k? Yeah don't do that to yourself. My advice is still to keep individual catalogs under 10k. Above that, you're just getting slowness and risk catalog corruption if C1 hangs itself from choking on the amount of images.

    I just switched from LR two weeks ago. Tried the entire catalog(only 65000) which crashed. I then Imported catalogs by year only. The shortcomings are No big deal when compared to the abilities of C1 to process images. I didn't bother using the "import from LR" tab. I just did individual years.

    First I created a conversion in export box from all psds to tiffs using an export conversion that kept files at same location as files. All DNG's transfered. Then deleted all psd's in catalog. I created catalogs based upon year which was then imported to same folder of existing LR catalog. The xmps and catalog for C1 remain on my Mac and images remain on external hd.

    I must say that the interpolation of my BW images to C1 are superior to LR.
    I gained 1 TB of HD space getting rid of the PSD's
    The software can WB IR images properly where as LR could not( the temperature slider did not go low enough)

    oh,,thats a good point..My C1 is faster.. when I would scroll thru a folder of a thousand images, Lr was slow as molasses. and the scrolling action couldnt keep up with the folder. IT would stop and start and stutter along to scroll. And that film strip was the same way.

    Now, my eyes can keep up. the scrolling thru a folder is too fast, I have to slow down. I created same look with the film strip and only dependent upon how fast I can see the files move by.

    Also, Jumping from LR to PS took a couple of seconds to load etc. With C1 is faster. Yes I miss the edit with PS keyboard shortcut,, I set up my Wacom to make the move with two keysstrokes..(Edit in PS and Save),, well even without the short cuts in LR,C1 is still faster.

    I was told very early on to always convert to DNG,,thats wrong! Always use the Raw file,,

    I looked at it this when when I switched, LR is great, C1 is great, Lr will produce really good images. C1 gives me the ability to produce great images also. But C1 gives me the ability to improve my images 2%-5%. To me , its worth it. All the changes that come with learning are worth it. The lack of a Robust Dam is worth it..Not that it isnt good,,its just different. ITs made for studio shooting tethered, but fine art photographers can use it too. But what it lacks , it makes up for with other toys..

    I thought I would miss the adj brush, the spot removal, the gradient tool etc,, but they are more precise in c1...

    Im just a newbie, and I really appreciate the software..Any other questions?

    Same issues here...very disappointing switch from LR to C1.

    C1 is crazy slow as soon as there are more than 30k images in one single C1 catalog. Importing LR catalogs that are larger than 10-15k images results ALWAYS in a crash....

    It takes forever to write metadata, we are talking 10-15x longer time than LR. Very very bad.

    I believe the only real gain is the tethering functionality, which is pretty impressive.

    My LR was slow, even though the catalogue was on a SSD. Some 35 GB. For 45000 files.

    Once I moved the catalogue to the HD, it freed up 80-100 GB of space. So the whole disk was eaten by hidden files.

    With C1-catalogue mode there is a much better usage of space. And C1 moves much faster in navigation, also with 45k images.
