Canon 5DS 5DSr RAW Support
Hi All and capture one team.
I have just purchased Captureone 8.
I have also just pre ordered my new Canon 5DS coming in Around May this year.
Please can you tell me if your going to support the 5DS just like you support the rest of the Lineup from canon?
(RAW file import)
Many thanks
Jimmy

Jimmy,
I can't speak on behalf of Phase One but given past experiences I can fairly confidently say that they will indeed support the 5Ds/r. It can sometimes be a few weeks after the camera hits the shelves.
Cheers!

OK Thanks - would be good too if the team could confirm this as well.
I was a bit concerned that Phase might be a little more reluctant to push forward this particular Cameras RAW support - this time.
Im sure they will be fine with it, I'm just transferring over too this camera from Phase one Digital back.
Thanks for your comment

Typically the best channel to get a direct answer is via a support case. I've been learning to use that even when just trying to ask some simple questions.
Besides that, I don't see Phase One shooting themselves in the foot and not supporting any modern high-end camera releases. It's only in their favour to do so! I'm sure Drew or someone will chime in.

From Phase One support team "
Hi
As soon as Canon releases their new SDK (software developer kit) and Phase One builds it into Capture One 8, then it will be officially supported.
The Canon Digital Camera SDKs contain several components that provide an interface for accessing Canon digital cameras and data generated by Canon digital cameras. Therefore, this will largely be left to Canon to make sure that we can officially support, but I imagine that this will be a big priority for them and for us.
Best regards,
Phase One Technical Support0 -
Hi
As some one else who has placed orders, I too am a little concerned about support for the new files. Given they won't support the Pentax medium format files, the arguments for them not supporting the new Canon 'mega' files must be the same: they directly compete with their IQ systems. So this is a little worrying.
I looked at the Phase One solutions but to be frank, it's a system that is (absolutely in this order) not appropriate for my work method or my pocket. I shoot a lot of 'street' for clients and I'm just another Joe with a camera with the Canons. If I were to show up with the Phase One system I'd stand out like a sore thumb and I'd not be able to work so candidly. So the higher resolution, and hopefully broader tone range is a big plus for me, and all this without considering the massive investment in fast primes and tilt shift lenses I have made over the years. It's just too compelling an argument for me, especially when dialling in the price point. It's not inconceivable for me to be using two of these at work (something I sometimes have to do when using primes). I'd be loth to wander around with a couple of IQ systems hanging off me, even if I could afford it.
So I am hoping that Phase One consider the legacy issues for us hard working pros and allow the new bigger files to be used with what has for me -without question- become the most indispensable workflow software on the market.0 -

This is a legitimate concern for me too.0 -
This is a legitimate concern for me too.
It is not a legitimate concern if you look at history- Nikon D1x
Canon 1Ds
Canon 1Ds mkII
1Ds mkIII / 5D mkII
Nikon D3x / Sony a900
Nikon D800/D4
and now Canon 5Ds
(Think I got the "top resolution 35mm" camera race in the right order)
Now asking "when will you support..." is probably a bit early since it is not shipping.
Nor do we get any units before the general public.
However the best explanation looking at history would that it will be supported when it is available + X amount of time for implementation and software release.
Pentax 645 should not be a part of this discussion since we have never supported other medium format cameras then our own.0 -

Sony A7R is missing from your list. 😄0 -
Sony A7R is missing from your list
Sony A7R is 36mp and was released 1,5year after D800 which is also 36mp.0 -

Actually I just ordered on ebay a Sony a7r after reading the Canon 5Ds announcement. For what I shoot the wider dynamic range of the Sony sensor is much more preferable to the just bigger Canon file. I'll using my TS-Es on the Sony primarily.
Will I be able to tether with the Sony and v8? I saw something about a separate C1P for Sony?0 -

The regular CO Pro 8 will be just fine. The Pro for Sony is identical, as long as you use Sony...0 -

Thanks Paul - looking forward to receiving the Sony and testing this week - I waited too long for that Canon announcement!0 -
Paul,
I would double check, but currently I do not believe the Sony A7R will tether at the moment. I thought I read in another thread that Sony broke something in a version update on the A7R. Search the forums.

It tethers just fine. The issue is only about Live view, and relates to the Sony firmware.
Let's stay on topic 😉0 -
As far as I can remember, it took quite a few months to support 5D MK III files, so guys - don't get your hopes up to have it up and tethering within a few weeks.
It's also not just up to PhaseOne but also Canon to supply them with SDK, once that's done it will take more time for PhaseOne to implement it.
I can already see hundreds of angry people posting straight away asking the same question.......0 -
canon dpp 4 does a great job with canon files so there is a good alternativ till we see c1 support for the 5ds but i doubt there will be a lot of demand from studio shooters for this camera anyway. the sony offers look so much better in almost every aspect and are much more versatile. a combination of c1, a7r and a zeiss otus delivers incredible files - my hasselblad mfd is unused since a long time….. well and most of my canon stuff is on ebay. 0 -
Bump/..
My 5DS-R just arrived and the files are supported in C1 8.
