Converting all images to Capture 11 Engine

You don't need to do it.

You might want to take a few examples to see whether you feel that you want to do it. If you are happy with what you have - why change?

Which engine does the Base Characteristics tool report as the current one (for the currently selected image)?

Sure, one doesn't have to do it….

But, for any image where we want to use the new features, we have 3 clicks: to Base Characteristics, the "upgrade" button and click back to wherever we came from (say exposure tab).

It would be helpful to be able to do it in batches.

And, we presume that the C1 team (in their infinite wisdom) has included improvements to the rendering as well. With the upgrade, the histogram hops a wee bit to the right on most of the images. It's minuscule, but visible in the shadows.

    Cheers

    JML,

In some situations - and perhaps depending on which of the previous engines is used for a variant, some of the changes can be quite significant on screen even if not looking so big in the histogram.

Just thought I would mention it.

For anyone who attends the "What's New in V11" webinar you will likely see a full explanation if what is available and how to go about upgrading variants according to your preference.

    Troy,

Basically it is usual C1 functionality.

Select the images you want to update, make sure "Edit all selected images" is active, go to teh Base Characteristics tool where, if the image is not al already the V11 engine, you should see an Update button. Click, read the message, confirm, and the update will run.

If you want to run a comparison first, firstly create a cloned variant for each of the selected images as per normal process is "Edit all" is active.

The cloned variants should stay selected. Engine of a CLONED variant will be the original engine version.

Now run the Engine Upgrade on just the selected clones. You will then have original and new renditions side by side ....

    Have fun.

Thanks, Grant. That worked for me. I had seen the "What's New" webinar, but somehow missed the batch upgrade.

    First webinar or the second?

It was in the first but as you have seen now is quite a simple thing so it did not take David long to cover it - easy to miss!

What does "Edit all selected images" do?

I have it enabled but it's not like Lightroom where I can turn that on and it applies all edits to the selected images right then. In LR I could do an "auto", Sharpen, Noise reduction, crop, etc. and it would apply too all I had selected.

I have the option in C1 and it doesn't seem to do anything to the group selected but only to the image that is selected in the the selected group.

It depends largely on what you are doing.

Id the result will be a straightforward write to the edit record file - star or colour rating, keyword - that sort of thing the change will be applid to all selected records if "Edit all" is turned on. (But if in passing you want to make a specific change to just one variant you can turn it off temporarily and make that change then back on again and continue.

If the edit involves recalculating the edit - so main image editing functions - the processing overhead might end up being very high if many images are selected. So for edit changes only the immediate or "primary" image is recalculated. When you are happy with the results you can apply the copy and paste action, with or without some intermediate selections of tools to apply, and then all the other selected image will be quickly updated in a batch.

    HTH.

    Hello,

Recently upgraded and wonder how to upgrade all my images to the new Capture One 11 engine?

If I select multiple images, the option to upgrade under the Base Adjustment tab is gone.

    Thanks!

    Troy

be careful in upgrading the engine as there is some new way for the color balance to render the image that might conflict with some of your style. See my post about it and the response from tech support

In practice, don't change the engine, if you are already happy with the edit. New engines have changed behavior in many ways, that's why they are new engines.

    Thanks for all the feedback!
I have decided to not upgrade the entire library. As mentioned, if there is not a reason to re-edit and I like the way the image is currently edited then Im leaving it.

    A wise choice IMO.

    Hi,
my wife has asked for a number of images (many) from 2004 to be updated, now the engine in 2004 was 6 so how do I force all open images to be 11, upgrading one at a time is painful?
I have the default engine setup as 11, but that is only for new images, not older ones.

You select all the images in question (Cmd-A), you make sure that the toggle to adjust all variants is on (the icon with the 3 stacked rectangles on the toolbar) then hit the upgrade button on the Colour tab.

BUT... you may find that you get unintended results. For instance, the HDR tool works quite a bit differently in version 11 from version 6 - highlight recovery now has much less effect on midtones. That is probably an improvement in the tool, but I can say from personal experience that images that I was happy with after adjusting them in version 6 (including highlight recovery) are no longer OK after upgrading them, and have to be reworked. I'd suggest that it is better only to upgrade images that you want to do some further work on - for instance because you now know better how to adjust them, or you need to use a tool that isn't available in version 6 (such as Levels as a local adjustment). If you are happy with an image, I'd leave well alone.

    Hi Ian,
I wish it was that simple, I have been doing each day, but selecting all but there are 4 months worth (about 10,000) photos. There is no history of previous adjustments due to a series of disk failures, the current structure is built from backups.
Looks like it will be specify dates and I will fix.

Well, you only need to convert the ones you want to work on at any one time, so you could do it in batches. It will do the rest no harm to sit there unconverted until you are ready for them.
