Will an eGPU help?
Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro 2018 32gb ram i7 with 560x gpu. My issue in Capture One Pro is when I’m collating my Photos in full screen, it takes about a second for the image to get sharp. I’ve set my previews to be the same as my screen resolution and regenerated all my photos, but it still takes about a second. My session is on an external gdrive portable ssd drive.
So my question is would and external egpu help me with my collating?
I’ve read many articles saying it helps with some stuff and not with others, is the a list of what an egpu will help with?
Thanks

I first would try with a session on your internal drive. If that improves the performance, it is not the GPU. 0 -
You should make sure at first, that the 560GPU is being used.
I use "gfxstatus" (a little program) to make sure of that. In C1 11 I have to set it to "discrete graphics only" when I'm not connected to a external monitor. C1 uses the better GPU then, it is way faster!0 -
How is your external drive attached to the machine? Is it via USB3, firewire (with an adapter) or using Thunderbolt? I have found that when I use USB 3, I get poor performance, worse than with the slower firewire 800 in fact. I'm not sure why, but USB3 has always been "fiddly" for me, despite trying several combinations of enclosure and cables. When my current drives fill up, I'm going to go for a four drive SSD from MacSales, with thunderbolt, and hopeful live speedy ever after. 0 -
So I copied my files to my local Mac book pro, and while the performance is slightly better, I still have the issue of where I'm moving between photos and the screen goes grey before the next photo is displayed and then snaps into focus.
Also, I'm sure I'm using the internal 560x card as I have the activity monitor running and I can see activity with the GPU as I'm moving between photos.
The external Gdrive I'm using is the mobile SSD via usb C.0 -
As I mentioned earlier, I've never had good performance myself with USB on any sort, but I have a 2012 that performs very nicely when the files are local or on a thunderbolt array. I wonder if the acceleration is not working for some reason. 0 -
I am running a 2017 with i7 and 16gb using an external 500gb SSD for photo only. It is connected directly to the MBP on its own port. Says it is connected at up to 10gb/s so really can't ask for more. The only down side is I am running out of disk space and will need to migrate to a 1tb version.
The displays are being driven by the Pro 555.
