Recent D800 problems
Since the last update of Capture One, all our D800 cameras are having problems tethering. We've tried different cameras, cables, computers, ports, OS, etc. to try to rectify the problem and the only thing that has changed in the past couple weeks is the latest update to Capture One. During tethered capturing, the camera will lose connection with Capture One. The only solution is to unplug the camera from the USB port and then reconnect. Sometimes that does not even work and a complete reboot is necessary. Has anyone else experienced this with their D800?

What OS X version are you on? 0 -
Happens in both 10.8 and 10.9. Prior to the last CO update, the issue did not exist with those same operating systems. 0 -
I'm having problems with the D800
takes a long tie to recognize the camera. Works for a bit and crashes randomly after a few minutes.0 -
I'm having similar problems. After being tethered for a while it will disconnect but says it's connected in the camera tool panel. Sometimes it reconnects just by turning the camera off, then on again. Other times I need to quit C1 and open it again. This scenario consistently happens and I've tried many cables. I'm on a late 2013 15" retina in 10.9.1 / C1 7.1.6. Prevent app nap box is checked. 0 -

Can you just download the previous version you were using to test and see if this is true?

We haven't seen any behavior change in our D800 when testing and as no change was made specific to the Nikon tethering I don't think this is specific to an update from Capture One version X to Capture One 7.1.6.
Regardless of what you do/do not find in installing your previous version you should create a support case and get us as many details you can. Software Logs, System Profile, Camera Firmware version, Workflow details, etc.
You may also want to try and tether to Nikon Camera Control to verify there isn't simply a hardware issue at hand here.0 -
Nikon Camera Control working fine on my machine. 0 -
hi,
d800 is the only camera that has tethering issue, for my experience.
i always have troubles with tethering, camera dissapears and i unplug and replug without file loss (at least).
this is my setting:
mpb 15" no retina late 2012 osx10.8.3
usb 3 cables with extension, without, original nikon cables, others ecc...
capture one 7.1.6
i'm going to buy the new mbp with two thunderbolt in order to have two big screens but i'm worried about
mavericks / capture one /d800, let me know please how is going!

Can you elaborate on the exact extension?
Are you using the main USB port on the system or the secondary? Is anything else using the other USB port?0 -
As a digital tech, I end up working with quite a few different camera systems including the d800. Bearing in mind that both my mac pro tower, and macbook pro retina are specifically tuned for use in a tethered environment, and other than some web surfing, and retouching they don't get used for anything else.
So far, the ONLY issue I have with the d800 is the very silly USB 3 connection on the camera side. It comes lose if you breath too heavily on it, which causes all kinds of issues. I understand Nikon's decision because USB3 is one of my favorite things lately, but the smaller micro-usb connection is extremely flimsy and for as often as it comes disconnected, I'd rather have USB2 for the stability.
To date, the only good method I've found to address it is with proper strain relief (you can use TetherTools or other home brew options) as well as one of these right angle cables (that took me flipping forever to find. Without that right angle adapter, the d800 comes loose almost on its own.0 -
i'm using these cables:
unitek super speed usb 3.0 active extension cable (5mt)
lindy usb 3.0 active extension cable (5mt)
i'm going to test this one:
http://WWW.FOTOCARE.COM/TETHER_TOOLS_16 ... /82405.htm
i have no card in the camera and i don't attach anything else in the other computer port.
wich 'main' usb 3.0 port you mean drew ?
aren't the same with same speed? this what i know from apple, so far.
thanks

I ran into the same problems on set yesterday. Nikon D800 and D800E, new MBP non-Retina, 10.8.5, C1 7.1.6.
Camera would lose connection frequently, sometimes it would sporadically reconnect at USB2 speed (verified by seeing it under HiSpeed Bus instead of SuperSpeed Bus in System Profiler). This was with a TetherTools active extension, and a short USB A to USB Micro B cable on the end. Never solved it...tried various bodies, cables, strain relief methods...it got better with a shorter cable, but was never perfect. Sometimes the camera would indicate Connected, but no images would flow. Unplugging and replugging would allow all of the buffered images to start flowing into the computer.0 -
My issue sounds very much like MikeNYC's issue. And, to add, it usually only happens when we are hammering a lot of images (which is why we use the D800 instead of the IQ sometimes). It never happens when we are shooting at slow frame rates. It happens with all different cables, repeaters, etc.
Paolo111—you can get that same repeater here for about $10 cheaper (although it is black and not orange): http://www.nine-volt.com/product-catego ... er-cables/
Drew—I haven't had time to download and test the older version of CO but hopefully can do sometime next week. But it needs to be in a real world tethered shooting situation. I would say that if I just connected the camera and tethered to CO then it would probably be successful.0 -
these right angle cables http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-asmr-xxg.html (that took me flipping forever to find. Without that right angle adapter, the d800 comes loose almost on its own.
I've tried a few of the Nikon branded cables and the Nikon cable lock that attaches to the D800 body, with various brands of usb3 active extensions. The camera randomly disconnects in the middle of shooting fast or when the camera is idle for a while. As others have stated, once the camera connects the images in the buffer come in. Tried connecting directly into both usb3 ports and a usb3 hub.
Guess i'll try one of those right angled cables.
We need a solution here people! Is it an earlier version of C1 besides 7.1.6? I was having the same problem in 7.1.5. This issue is a thorn in my f_ing side!!!0 -
Yeah, the Nikon cable lock is garbage. Also, some of the other locks out there are either also inferior or take too long to rig up each time you want to connect or disconnect the camera. I'm actually testing a cable lock system for DigiPlate that can lock/unlock a cable in a matter of seconds and is super strong. I actually can hang my camera from the cable as I pass it down to an assistant when getting off a lift without the cable disconnecting or breaking off.

the way that plate extends beyond the grip and is not flush with it seems like it would dig into your palm. 0 -

I guess it's all in how you hold the camera. So far I have not run into that problem. I personally hold the camera on the right side with my right hand and usually stabilize by holding the lens with my left hand. I almost never shoot vertically but I just did for the sake of this post and the plate (now on the right side when the camera is rotated) adds some bulk but nothing unmanageable. I am also testing a similar plate for the H1 with my IQ back. So far with these plates I have never had a cable become disconnected.0 -
sounds like you own the company. 😉 0 -
thanks dana21 for cheaper cables suggestion but i'm looking for the orange one to avoid any crew guy step into it!
i use tetherlock to lock cable under the camera but is not enough, it seems d800 connection sometime is a real nightmare!
i didn't understand either what drew means about main usb3 port regarding mbp, anyone knows if the two usb ports are different in term of speed?
grazie
paolo
ps: anyway, i had the same connection issue even with co6...0 -
I shot using MAC OS native camera control.
Works perfectly. Simple and fast. Six hours, zero problems.
Why can't CO7 do this on the same machine with the same cables?0 -

Because we use the Nikon SDK, not a PTP.
A PTP pulls from your CF card, just like shooting to card and downloading to the computer.
Nikon's SDK communicates directly with the camera, allows camera controls and faster shooting.
More complex software has more complex communication and potential for more complex problems.
You're welcome to use PTP an the Hot Folder option in Capture One, it's been there since version 4.5.0 -

Came here looking for this exactly issue.
This does *not* have to do with the USB3 cable being disconnected. I confirmed this on a tripod with no movement. Turning on/off the camera immediately reconnects with the D800.
This is only happening since upgrade to 7.1.6.0 -

I'm using the primary USB port and no extension. I've tried multiple USB3 cables, including an unused one.0 -
could somebody please explain me wich is the primary usb port in mac book pro and what is the difference between the two?
grazie!
paolo0 -
In the new Retina mac book pro's, it seems that the USB connection is more stable with the right side port. The USB port on the left seems to have connections to the screen and the built-in webcam (and maybe other stuff as well) 0 -
thanks christian,
i still have the no retina mbp with two usb on the left: do you now if even with that there's a difference?
(i digged in various site without any result).
grazie again!

Yes, the one closest to the power supply is your best bet.0 -
Solved my problem by using a Belkin thunderbolt hub and plugging the D800 into it. No disconnects at all.
C1 7.2 mavericks on 2013 retina mbp.0 -
Ok so, Today on a shoot (knowing full well that everything is working fine) we were shooting with a D800 to a late 2013 macbook pro using the right side USB. The software we were using was lightroom (still potentially relevant to this topic though) cables were a USB 2.0 extension with a repeater and a USB 3.0 cable - both tether tools. An opportunity came where the photographer was situated closer to me so I disconnected the extension and connected the USB 3.0 cable to the Macbook pro. Did not establish a connection at all! Not at all, Nope! No fast USB 3.0 for me! I immediately re attached the extension for unnecessary length and got a connection straight away! I guess this suggests quite heavily that the issue is not software related and points to the power requirement of the camera to sense a computer. 0 -

Reread that entry carefully. There is a Key piece of information you noted that completely explains the cause of this issue.[quote="NN206299UL" wrote:

Because you used a USB 2.0 Cable, the driver and USB protocol on the computer was USB 2.0. The Port itself was running at USB 2.0. Once you removed the extension, you expected the connection to continue but without the USB 2.0 cable the port needed to reboot the connection as USB 3.0. What you found was that this doesn't happen instantly. Often, removing the hardware and rebooting finder is necessary, sometimes even the whole system.
I realize that the overwhelming majority of users perceive USB as a simple connection but its important to keep in mind that switching from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 is not as easy as flipping a switch. In the scenario you described, had you used a USB 3.0 extension, this likely would not have been an issue.0
