Update - ended up having kill the task and reboot my computer for other reasons but upon reboot continued my mega import. Currently at 220433 photos and 261g ram. I will have to stop for a few days for a few reasons (like making money) but as soon as I can I will continue the upload process. a few notes , removing all movie file from any import path and avoiding using my wacom pen without a doubt improves stability (A LOT).FYI wacom mouse is fine - additional - older wacom drivers give better stability than the newer ones when using the pen.

Well at just over 220,000 photos and performance is CRAPPY and unstable. Support tells me that I don't have enough RAM. I have 32g of ram. C1 and all sister processes have never used more than 19g and that was during import. Running the catalog has never used more than 12. This was their reply to my submitting logs with memory leak errors. BTW LR seems to handle (albeit with some slowdown) over 3x this number of images. Media Pro had cataloged the 220,000 + images and is still usable (also with some slowdown) but C1 starts to have memory leaks and grinds to an unusably slow pace and or crashes.

Can anyone please take a moment to explain to me how this is a computer issue and not a C1 Programming issue.

I would give a chance to another good DAM called IMatch v3.6. For me NEVER any problems during import occured and the whole import with progress bar is very transparent for the user. A lot of users report about very high stability with large file numbers in database. I use IMatch also with CaptureOne and Lightroom. However the taking care of sidecar files in C1 subdirectories is a certain issue. If I am right this is only solved perfect in the IMatch v5.0beta (under development). Also in IDimager the C1 sidecar handling works perfect (for e.g, renaming, deleting, moving, copying image files), but IDimager is discontinued since summer 2012. With MediaPro I had big big problems with import and this not primarily due to file number, but mainly due to some special file formats (raw, video) and corresponding preview generation issues (WIC and C1 rendering). Some files could block easily the whole import process. May be this can happen also with C1? To my knowledge in C1 you cannot switch from C1- to WIC-rendering like with MediaPro.

to what number of photos that C1 7 test team did prior to the product release.

One would assume that they did not try to import 500,000 photos.

the Media Pro recent update to 1.4 may be the answer for me - now I start the tedious task of rebuilding my entire catalog. HAHAHA I will keep you posted. Dont hold your breath tho since I am in over my head with work at the moment.
