storing masters on external hard drive

You'd have to give us a little bit more information if you would like elaborate answers, because to this question i would say to copy the files to an external hard drive and that's it.

Are you using the catalog feature, sessions, ??

Can you define "masters"? It is not Capture One speak, so we might need some translation (I think Aperture users got more of an idea).

Yes,my apologies, a bit short on information. I use Aperture3 and have CO on trial. And I really like this software so far. In A3 they have "referenced" files which can be stored on an external hard drive and they have "versions" stored in the computer for editing, etc. This way I have all my images stored to an external drive/backup which frees space on my computer HD. I want to do the same thing with CO7. cheers, Peter

I always have my "masters"/originals/raw files stored on external HD's and I keep on the same external HD's also the relevant catalogs/libraries/sessions and in this way I can move easily everything from one computer station to an other one smoothly and I can also easily back up everything I need (I use Carbon Copy Cloner for this).
With minor differences I do the same on Lightroom, Aperture and Capture One. It is also possible to store the catalogs/libraries on the internal HD keeping the "masters" on external HD's, if you wish, but personally I don't do that.
I am not sure if you can do do any editing, other tan metadata, if the "master" is on an unplugged HD.
With CO7 I am for now using the "managed" approach, in Aperture terminology, keeping everything inside the library because this is new in CO and I am not sure if in the future I will move to the "referenced" approach which is absolutely possible.
A lot of choices are available.

Thank you Ario. "A lot of choices are available," seems to be the key phrase. I gather CO has introduced a new Management system with CO7 and many users are still getting their heads around this. The issue for me being that I do have the choice to "Master" or "Reference" in CO7. It is a very steep learning curve for a new CO user, but pieces of the jigsaw are falling into place and, as mentioned, I am pretty much hooked on this software. It took me a couple of years to get a reasonable understanding of Aperture - mostly learned through the Apple Forum. However, with this experience and PS too, I suspect CO will be easier. Cheers, Peter

I am exploring the different options made available with the new catalog functions of CO7 and I found a workflow problem for which I am looking for a workaround.
I prefer the referenced approach because the raw file organization remains totally independent from the SW I use and I can refer to it either from LR or Aperture or Capture One leaving it untouched (also for use with SW which might be available in the future). I personally use a chronological structure (year/month/day) since my first approach to the digital imaging many years ago, but this is not relevant.
I keep both the picture folders and the data base folders (LR and Capture One for instance) on the root folder of the same external HD's of which I have multiple copies (clones) so that I can move them among different computers, working always on the most update version of my files.
With LR this is easy and smooth since I can plug in any HD and the library does not loose the reference to the originals, but with CO7 this does not happen and I am forced to work offline, with some limitation (not so many 😊 ).
I imagine that this is because CO7 is looking for the originals following the complete path while LR is probably ignoring the HD name if the originals are located in the same root folder as the library.
It is not a very big issue because other than exporting I can do almost everything but still I see this as a limitation to my usual workflow.
