Unable to complete catalog backup due to permissions issue
Before I open a support case I am hoping someone else has experienced this same problem and has a solution. I’ve searched the user forum but haven’t come up with anything.
A few days ago when quitting C1 I started getting a message in the Catalog Backup screen: “You don’t have permission to save the file “2017-07-17 16.10.20†in the folder “C1 Catalog 1â€. This folder is where my C1 Catalog is stored. It is a referenced catalog with the master images stored in a different location on the internal drive. No updates to C1 or the Mac operating system have been done recently. C1 10.1.2 and OS 10.12.5. The backups are done to an external drive. I have three C1 Catalogs and get the same message for each when quitting.
Each time I click “Try again†the 16.10.20 number increased by one or two digits. And each day the date changes. The instructions on the Catalog Backup screen are to navigate to the folder in question and change the permissions for the offending file. The file is not visible even when I enable the view invisible files option in the Mac Finder. Nor does it show up via a search.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem? I’ve tried verifying the Catalog, replacing the C1 application with a backup copy from well before when the problem started, replacing the catalogs with backups, running all sorts of diagnostic utilities, etc.
I’ve got catalog backups through Time Machine so it’s not likely I will lose data but this is an annoying problem that I’d like to solve as soon as possible.
Thanks for any assistance!

The first thing I would check would be the "General" tab of Capture One preferences. Near the bottom is a field identifying the location (folder) where Capture One should put it's backups. C1 is behaving as if this field is “C1 Catalog 1â€. It could also be that for some reason the current value is invalid, and it's picked “C1 Catalog 1†instead.
I would try re-entering this location field.0 -
I had this with my catalog on my xternal drive, I had to set permissions again by ticking ignore permissions on this drive box. Worked fine afterwards. Not sure why it reset though. 0 -
Thanks for the replies.
I have checked under the General tab and the path is set correctly to the backup location on the external drive. I've tried changing the location of the backups along with removing all permission constraints. No change. C1 always tries to save the backup to the Catalog folder even though this is not the correct location. I've also removed all permission contraints for the Catalog folder. I've also repaired permissions and done a number of other diagnostics steps but doesn't change anything. Very strange.0 -

Saving a copy of a catalog to the catalog folder sounds like something that might happen if a catalog is being updated for a new release and a copy of the original from the previously release level is being automatically saved.
Is that any sort of possibility for your situation?
Quite how it might relate to any normal backup I have no idea. I don't use catalogues much.

Thanks for the reply.
I don't think it has anything to do with the catalog "being updated for a new release...." I upgraded from v9 to 10 six weeks ago without any issues. The backups worked fine up until a few days ago.0 -

Did you check permission on the folder in the finder and is it accessible to you?
Can you create a new catalog in the folder to test?0 -
IAA - thanks for your response
I've checked and the catalog folder has no permissions restrictions at all. There is no problem with updates occurring to the actual catalog file nor any problems saving other test files to the catalog folder. It is only on the save of the next backup file where the problem occurs. Creating a new catalog in the folder I don't think will help as I already have three catalogs I work with and they are all in different folders and all have the same problem.
It is really two issues, as I see it: 1) C1 is not saving the backup files to the location path set in Preferences, and C1 will let me change the location but it doesn't recognize the change when saving, 2) there is a permissions issue when it is trying to do the save. I am sure the two issues are interrelated.0 -
Hmmm
My backups are all set n an external disk, and C1 did initially have same problem as you describe. It was disk permission issue which I resolved and then ok. Although occasionally it does say it cannot write to backup, I guess like you are describing, and I have to manually reset my access to the disk - even though I didn't change it.0 -
Manually resetting permissions has had no impact. If I could get C1 to actually save the backups to a new location that might help, but it always tries to save to the catalog folder which is the incorrect location to begin with.
I installed 10.12.6 last night with the hope that it might fix things. No. Once I have a bit more time I will raise a support case.0
