Capture One 5.0.2 Speeds on network drive problem
I am evaluating Capture One 5 at the moment, we are already heavy users of version 3.
However i am experiencing dreadful results with version 5 accesing our network sessions.
We have an N: network mapped drive which holds all our sessions and currently has around 8500 session folders in it. We shoot around 200 sessions a month. So far version 5 has taken over an hour to load the sessions list into the file browser and hasn't reached the end yet.
At the moment it seems that version 5 is basically un-useable at all.
Which is a big problem for us.
My pc is a Dell Precision 670 zeon 3.4 GHz with XP pro sp3 and 3Gb RAM. We have 4 Dell servers running Server 2003. How can we fix this?
This is urgent as we need version 5 as we plan to move to Canon 5D mkII's and version 3 doesn't support them otherwise i'd stay with version 3

Duncan,
Contact support with your specifics. We would really appreciate the help of a big studio, such as yourself to help us improve Network access. At the moment there are shortfalls in Capture One 5 and Network access but it is certainly possible to use with the correct settings.0 -

Not really. I submitted a support case in December concerning problems of sorting folders in Capture One 5 over a network.
In short, if the photos being processed are located on a network server and they are viewed in a particular sort order, that order will be lost next time C1 is run.
James of Technical Support basically said that this was an issue at the moment and that I should edit photos on a local disk (out of the question) or remain with 3. However, this will be a serious problem if I upgrade to a new camera which is not supported in release 3!0 -
Michael,
If your Network doesn't allow for network access to work in a efficient manner then I hope you will remain patient while we continue to look into the matter. As James mentioned, the issue for you only exists "for the moment".0 -

My network is a 100% standard linux server running samba in a large cross-platform network. It has worked transparently and efficiently with a very wide variety of machines (including some very obscure and specialised equipment) for a number of years now and the only issue I am having is with Capture One (not release 3, which is OK). The large user base which uses the server include a number of Windows based machines, ranging from XP to Vista and on to Windows 7 64 bit.
Having being trained to PhD level in software engineering, I can tell you with a good degree of confidence that if software works with everything except one package, the likelihood is that the one package is the one at fault, not everything else.0 -
Michael,
I don't have a PhD, I can only tell you what I know from experience. Some work, some don't. We're working on the issue. Sit tight.0 -
Has this issue been fixed in the new release 5.1? 0 -

Well, to answer my own question:
It seems that the sort order problem has indeed been fixed in 5.1, which is just wonderful. Many thanks! I hope this is not just my own initial impression ...0 -

Hi there, so what are these settings?
Thanks

A Linux server does not a network make Doctor phil, networks consist of switches and routers. Servers and clients simply use the network. The configurability of the Linux operating system is both a blessing and a curse. I've seen more than a few cases of the OS being messed up.....Although if it is working well for other things, it is likely OK. There are application specific requirements that may not be configured correctly on your linux SERVER that affect COP5.0 -
Unfortuneately we have stopped using Capture One for the forseable future. It is a great piece of software which has served us fabulously but is now just unbearable. Having moved to the Canon 5d mkii we had to do something as capture one 3 doesn't support it. However capture one 5 doesn't support networks at all well.
See my above post.
We have moved to Adobe Raw which works well with our networks.
If this situation were to be rectified we would without doubt have prefered to stay with Capture One

Have you tried with Capture One 5.1.1?0 -
Yes I've installed version 5.1.1 and it's no better it's grim. Plus it has issues with deleting images gets it's knickers in a royal twist saying image already exists.
But network speed is HORRENDOUS we have several thousand session folders online on our servers and C1 5 takes over an hour to start!!!!!!!!!!!!! No other programs have this problem even Adobe Bridge only takes seconds, ok Adobe raw is not as good but at least you can use it.0 -
I also use 3.7.9 (and will as long as I can), but will be forced to 5.x by newer cameras.
I tried 5.1.1 on a Thecus N5200 Pro NAS and confirm incredibly slow performance. There is a single Full-Duplex Gigabit ethernet switch between the workstation and the server. It takes forever (maybe literally, I gave up after 30 minutes) just to list the directories. Then, if you can get to the one you want, it again takes forever to load the images. Even with local files it seems to take longer than it should, but over a network it is ridiculous.
Hopefully you are still working on this issue and get it fixed soon for a new release.
Thanks,

I just wanted to let you known the problem with loosing image order and slow performance on network drives still exists with 5.1.2
If there is something for me to try let me know.

this has been an issue for years, ever since version 3.
we've given up as we "can't" use local drives in our workflow and gone over to ACR which if you have a decent camera profile gives good results - not as good as c1 but c1 simply doesn't work for our network of an afp server and a netgear gigabit switch.
good to hear that others are starting to see this issue too. maybe P1 will pull their fingers out at long last.
i thought for a long time we were the only studio that used a networked library!
btw when we contacted support their answer was that c1 isn't designed for network use and therefore they weren't going to help us.0 -
Adrian,
I looked into your support cases and can't find any reports of issues when accessing files over a Network. I don't doubt that you contacted support but I don't believe that we would have told you we couldn't help. We are always happy to take your information and look closer for possible solutions when using network access, with so many variances in network types and hardware there are always things that can be amended to improve performance. With AFP Network Access specifically, 5.1.2 included a large improvement in performance.
We don't claim that Capture One is perfect over a network, with the necessary operating files stuck with the RAW data there is a large strain on resources when working over a network. However, we are endlessly working to improve the software and the more information we have from customers like you the faster and better we can meet your needs.0
