Capture 4.6, Canon 1DS MK III, and lots of frustration
Configuration: MacPro Tower - 8-core Intel 3.2GHz processor with 8GB RAM. OSX 10.5.6
I have been an avid user of Capture ever since version 2.8. I am very comfortable with the earlier versions and have always been a fan of Phase One..until I used Capture 4.6. I can understand the need for updating the software to accommodate new cameras, and new OS functions but I don't think that 4.6 is moving in the right direction. Phase's software is far superior than Leaf or Hasselblad's, but I am still disappointed.
Sessions
I've always used sessions to separate my shot sequences. Shot One is its own session, and Shot Two is its own session.
With 4.6, when I create a new session, I have to remember to copy and paste the name under "CAPTURE NAME" in the New Session dialogue. Then, I have to remember to setup "Name and 3 Digit Counter" as well as reseting the Capture Counter.
PROBLEM: Why does the default count start at TWO instead of ONE?? Also, if I create a new session, why does the count continue at let's say 185 instead of 1? Shot 02 could start at 185 if I forget to reset counter.
130 images or less???
The software is very unstable once you start to get over 125 images. It's unbelievable that my old 3.7.9 sessions could hold 300 images without a single glitch. 4.6 would hang randomly during capture. The progress indication would be stuck and the spinning hour glass would appear. You have to force quit the software, disconnect the USB cable, and then add the session back. You have to set the Capture Counter back to the last filename but incremented by one to be consistent. So, if you are doing a NORMAL photo shoot, and can't get your picture in 125 frames or less, you will have to span across multiple folders. Not very professional. Explaining the crashes is even more comical. "well, you took too many pictures..."
Renaming...a joke.
Batch rename used to work so FLAWLESSLY in 3.7.9. Why would the developers change this or not replicate this? If I have my images set with a 3-digit counter and choose to rename the entire job, the example given in the batch rename pull-down even shows 3-digits but the images are all renamed with a 2-digit extension. If I batch rename again, all of the images don't get renamed. One image does not get renamed if I select 10 images. There isn't anything in the preferences to set for this.
Importing from a card....a funnier joke.
Who invented this and with what reasoning? 3.7.9 worked flawlessly. A simple dialog box appeared, allowing an intuitive way to rename files, and to delete on import. In 4.6, the dialogue box appears but seems not tied to the current session. You have to remember the job name and to cut and paste the capture naming. The counter will not be 3-digits even though the job has tethered captures with 3-digit naming. Also, the default folder that the batch goes into is not the Captures folder. You have to peruse the folders. This whole process, which used to be about 15 seconds long is now minutes of fumbling around. You then have to rename everything for numbering consistency.
RGB Controls under curves?
What happened to the separate controls?
Overlay? Pixelated at times...and random
This used to work well in 3.7.9. You knew that it would be pixelated. In 4.6, the first time you load an EPS file as an overlay, it's nice and crisp. This is nice in 4.6, but when I open a previous session and select the same file as an overlay, it appears pixelated. If I open the session that I first put the overlay on, it corrects itself across the other sessions. Nice waste of time.
EDITING?? This is the final problem that is forcing me back to 3.7.9.
Editing in 4.6 is a constant battle of me vs. the software trying to think for me. If I have four images up, and I want to replace the top right corner with another image, it re-arranges based on name or date. So, if I knew that my favorite image out of the four were in the top left corner, that might not appear at the bottom.
If we are shooting tethered, and the photographer tells me to mark an image so we can remember that we LOVED that image, the next image captured will also have the mark. Whether it's a color or stars. You have to unselect the next tethered image or you will soon have 50 images after your initial select ALL CHECKED!!!
This is enough for today. I have more things but I'm limited to 60,000 characters.

Your frustration is amply shared by myself and others, and indeed, many of your points have been stated previously. This is not to imply that voicing them again is not worthwhile, indeed it is my (by now) desperate hope that their reiteration will have the desired consequences and that we shall once again have conversion software of the caliber and user-friendliness of v3.7.9 Pro. 0 -
With regard to importing from a card I feel your pain.
It would seem in V4, importing from card images are not classified as captures any longer but in 3.7 they were?
Why we need different session types is beyond me (tethered or untethered). I always use tethered sessions so I always have a capture folder. If I need to put different images in their own folders, (be they tethered or from card) I personally feel the should still be in one central 'Capture' folder.
The software is great but V4 has introduced some funny working methods.0 -
I also feel your pain, it is sssooo frustrating, I spend my time deleting files from the system library and reinstalling C0 4; then it all starts again. There does not seem to be a good solution, at this moment in time. 0 -

I started a case file for the "crashing over 100 captures" issue. Look here for my last post on this thread.
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=6647
And here is the last response I got from Phase yesterday.
"Dear Andreas,
we have had some progress on this issue. It seems that maybe the error is not within Capture One as such, but might be related to Apple's own services that contain a memory leak that would needed to be fixed by Apple.
Next time you shoot, could you please open the Activity Monitor form your Applications/Utilities and observe the usage of system resources?
There is going to be a process called Image Capture Extension. You might see during the shoot that this process will start using more and more memory, let's say starting on 40MB, then 500MB, then 1GB etc.
If you see this kind of behavior then we are sure this is related to the Apple issue and will need to be fixed by Apple in 10.5.7.
If you do not see such behavior, it might be related to some other internal problem and we would definitely like to hear about your findings.
Thank you very much for contacting us.
With kind regards,
Jakub

I haven't looked into this yet.

I actually started a thread on this crashing issue. There is a similar response from Phase at the end of that thread.

I do not understand why phase one did remove all the good working own ideas and features to replace it by a copy of other programs they wher ahead.
I really dont know what is going on in a developers head that is changing a software completly when ALL the users (professional users from previews c1pro 3) loved the program becouse of the way the program was.
And even more annoying is the fact that a lot of the professional features are simply removed.
I mean - changing the way a program that everybody worked inside is not a problem (if it would be stable still) but changing everything this program was loved for is so - well i cant find the words for it without getting abusive.. sorry.0 -
i so agree. to me its a myth why they ever developed a v4 that is soo much different than the v3. v3 was *perfect* and did not needed to be upgraded feature-wise in my opinion (except for new cameras support) and especially not changed in workflow. all those fancy color controls are useless, thats what you do at home in photoshop. but on set you need a light, stable and fast tool for capturing. thats why it once was called capture one.
phase one removed useful features like 3 color channel curve control and instead implemented more and more stuff that makes you slow down (eg that horrible import window that does not let you import until it has rendered previews of all the pictures. takes some while on a 4 gig card...
v4 was a huge mistake. EVERYBODY i know (and those are seriously busy photographers or digi ops working from BMW to vogue all over europe) loved v3 and hate c1 pro v4.
i have only one thing to say:
WHY??0 -
Simply put, v4 Capture Naming is insane!!! Who designed the new workflow? Please C1 team, take a meeting!
No way to shoot some tethered images then untether, shoot to card and maintain similar naming? (using camera counter)
Camera counter number doesn't match my actual camera filename/number.???
Not to mention: very missed Camera Ready / Capture Done sounds.
No simple way (ala 3.7.9) to set white balance.
Ability to manually rotate images as desired.
Batch Renaming? HaHaHa. (Although no photo software has ever got this right)
(See Renamer4Mac)
Don't understand why v4 couldn't have used the word version instead of variant.
Is it copyrighted? I never never said "I would like to make another "variant" of this image" Is this a European thing?
Have no choice but to go back to 3.7.9 (although I still don't understand what "Update Before and Revert to Before" means)
v4 = ten steps forward 20 steps backwards :-(

Let's not forget that really handy little focus window.
All the big rental studios in my area have stayed with v3.7 for the reasons you have mentioned (plus it runs a lot faster). V4 definitely is a step back in my opinion. Come on phase one, get your act together !0 -
I recall reading when v4 was released one of the reasons for the radical overhaul from v3 was improvements would be less time consuming to implement. That sounded sensible to me at the time.

I am bumping this up and I am making a silly joke.
At least they changed the color scheme to match Lightroom and Aperture 😂
Seriously, Phase One needs to address these issues and listen to working professionals.
Thanks,

I strongly encourage you all to update to 4.8.2 if you have not yet done so. 0 -
My file names require a prefix job number, underscore, then file-name. In one job, many times I'll shoot tethered and untethered. In the past, pre 4.8, I could do this seamlessly without issues.
I downloaded the 30-day trial of 4.8 Pro, and low-and-behold, this seamless process is now not possible. BACK TO LIGHTROOM, as cumbersome as it may be!0
