Question about Catalogs

    Its the same as Aperture.

You can have different catalogs that reference the image files if you want or you can share the catalog by copying it around.

You can also store the images in the catalog (like Aperture managed library) and copy that around but usually its too big 😊

Even if it is possible I do not think it is a great idea, unless you really want to have different catalogs.
I also use more than one Mac on different locations but I really want to have the very same catalog (referenced in my case) on every machine.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner to update a copy of the catalog on a portable HD and transfer it on any other machine I am gong to use, if you have a fast portable SSD you can alternatively leave the working catalog on it, or you can synchronize the catalogs on different machines using a cloud service (in this case which I have not tested yet you must be sure that the synchronization has been completed before start working on the new machine).

    Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions sizzling badger and Ario. I'm still finding my way with this but I guess if all the information about the adjustments etc are kept in the catalogue file then having more than one catalogue for the same set of images would not not work well. So moving the catalogue file would be the only option.

I do like the idea of using something like Drop Box to store catalogue files but keeping image files as referenced. I think I am going to try that now.

I will post again once I have tried it out.

    Hi,
Just thought I would write an update. I had a good read and watch a few youtube videos. As I have used aperture up until now and always used referenced images I thought the best thing was to create a session for each of my Projects in Aperture and then export the files from Aperture to the Capture folder of the Session folder along with the xmp sidecar file. It took a bit of time but I managed it.

I also want to use Media Pro due to its superior cataloging capabilities so I thought I dont need to use the catalogues in CO. SO I created a Master Catalogue in Media Pro and imported a couple of the Sessions using the Import Items command in the file menu in Media Pro. Everything just came in perfectly but I thought I would try an few things out before importing everything else.

So I thought I would edit an image with the "Open in" command to see how that would work. I think that a different Session was active in CO during this process and the session might have got corrupted as I can only see about 3 images out of 40 when I open the session but all the images and visible in Media Pro. I delete the cof & cop files and tried recreating the session file but its still the same.

Any suggestions, I'm getting a bit irritated with this now!

    Thanks in advance!
