Did you by chance modify the name or the position of the folders in the HD from inside Lr? I always keep my files in external HD and never lost the connection for reasons not attributable to changes done by myself. Anyhow if you see the HD from inside any CO catalog you should also be able to view the folder hierarchy (ctrl+click on Folders) and reconnect the missing folders to the catalog.

This may be a peculiar thing the OS does with trying to re-mount shares that did not eject properly.

If you are feeling brave we can walk you through some tests using the terminal and bash. Please make a support case at support.phaseone.com and ask for me.

Problem solved by doing the following:

    1. Restarted my system
    2. Restarted C1
    3. Locate folder (disk was recognised as before)"

... and received the following from support (fyi):

    >>>>>
    Maarten,
"Nothing has changed in mounting path, naming or anything"
I can understand that you feel this is the case but the behavior suggests otherwise.

    Your steps to solve the issue;
    "1. Restarted my system
    2. Restarted C1
    3. Locate folder (disk was recognised as before)"

This further suggests that the mount point was indeed altered from the original...

Should this occur again I would suggest that you first establish the true mounting point directory in Disk Utility and check the /Volumes/ folder to establish proper connection is present.

    ...
I would simply suggest that if it occurs again you check the settings previously noted to determine where the connection failure may be.

To be honest, I'm not very comfortable with this explanation. The three steps I did seems to me like wizardry and since "locate" didn't work at first, it is quite a hassle to connect your images if, for some reason, your device is incorrectly mounted/unmounted.
In my opinion the use of external devices should be more robust, don't we all use them! The best RAW-converter++ in the world deserves better!

I think the results you took to restart the machine would have indeed fixed any mounting point conflict.
Should this happen again, the advice in the support case is pretty sound so I'd suggest you check those factors and then we can get an idea of what/how/why the files on your external volume were disconnected from the Catalog.
