How do I get started with Capture One
Hi, just installed Capture One Express 11 for Windows. How do I get started? How do I open ONE FILE and play around with the editing functions? I've looked at all the documentation and it doesn't say anything about how to actually get a photo into the viewer. The Getting Started video is completely different from what I seen when I first open the program. When I start the program, all I see is an Import button that won't import any of the 10s of thousands of photos I have on my computer. There are no viewer options for opening a file, although the help documentation shows one. My UI does not match anything I'm seeing online. Any help is greatly appreciated. Please pardon my frustration and thanks in advance.

There are some great tutorial videos on Capture One's YouTube channel.
Try this one on intro to the interface
This one on creating a catalog and importing images
This on essential adjustments
... and this on exporting your work
All under 5 minutes each. There are loads more, some longer and in more depth, but those should get you started.
I hope you enjoy using C1.

You have the Express version you say, so that is simplified compard to most of the video tutorials.
As I understand it if uses the Catalog concept so you start by IMPORTING some images.
However the Express version is a SONY ONLY version as far as RAW files are concerned so the first question is which camera do you have and are all of your older files also Sony camera files? As a free application it also has reduced functionality compared to the Pro versions.
This recent video covers Capture One 11 Express.

If you have already seem this and still have questions we may need dig some more into your situation but if you have not seen it this should be a good place to start.
HTH.

Not knowing which version you have, I don't know if you are able to work in Capture One sessions, as opposed to catalogues. I prefer the Sessions approach. Sessions are typically used for individual shoots or specific projects and aren't typically used to contain multiple projects in the way catalogues are used.
It would be typical for the photographer using Sessions to handle the organization via subdirectories on the hard drive — analogous to collections within a Capture One catalogue. After seeing a couple of Capture One webinars in which the guest hosts (professional photographers) use Sessions that way, I decided to try it and now prefer Sessions to catalogues.
Assuming you have a version that supports Sessions — you can open an individual image or several without having to use the Import process.
1. Create a new Session. That automatically creates a .cosessiondb (Session database) file, plus subdirectories named Capture, Selects, Output, and Trash — they are subdirectories of the one that contains the .cosessiondb file.
2. Close Capture One. Copy the images you want to work with into the Capture subdirectory.
3. Re-open Capture One, open the Session you just created, select the Library tab, then the Capture folder, and Capture One starts building previews of the images.
That's an obviously way too brief run-through but is just meant to say you can work on images without importing.
If you do want to import images into a Session: Open a Session and select Import from the File menu (or press Control+Shift+I — that's the default keyboard shortcut for Windows. On the Mac it's probably Command+Shift+I).0 -
Hi Mike,
Express is Catalog only, SONY (as far as RAW goes) only.
It's free and comes promoted with a Sony camera purchase.
It has some of the more interesting features and functions excluded and is intended to be a base option for Sony users who just wish to convert RAW files or who have only simple processing requirements for their needs.
No sessions, no tethering (iirc) and a some of the more complex options eliminated as being unnecessary for a simple to use version.

What is it about Sony files that calls for having a converter dedicated to those files alone? 0 -

Nothing special about them, except that Phase One has a deal with Sony to release a free Express version and a (much) cheaper Pro for Sony version which both support only Sony files. The converter itself is exactly the same.0
