How to determine if an image is managed or referenced?

Select the picture then go to File/Show in Finder and you will see if the picture is stored inside (managed) or outside (referenced) the catalog.

To add: as an alternative, when you select Library tool > Folders section > Catalog object, you will see all images that are managed.

This confuses me too. I have only one catalog which is held on a separate drive (LaCieMasters) with a folder (CO-Originals) on the same drive. I would like all images to be referenced and be located in that folder. The issue of concern is that Catalog Collections - All Images reports that I have 40,917 images. However Folders>Catalog shows no images. Below that in the Folders section and at the same level LaCieMasters>CO-Originals lists only 4799 images with various sub folders containing a variety of numbers that presumably add up to 4799. This leaves 36,118 images held in an unknown location . I have tried using Show Package Contents on the Catalog file but I could not find any actual image files there which is odd because the Catalog has a file size of over 85 gb. There are a whole lot of sub folders there under "Originals" with big numbers but they all seem to be empty. The general search function does not seem to allow a search for this kind of query. So the question remains how to shift the images that are probably managed into referenced status.

That would seem to indicate that you have no managed images. Others may chime in here, but if Catalog shows NO number or has no images appearing when selected, then you have no managed images.

I suspect the totals you're seeing in a parent folder do not take sub folders into account. From the folders panel in CO, right click on "CO-Originals" and select "Show in Finder" This will make it easier for you to navigate through the sub folders and see where things are.

I've had look at this as suggested and there are a lot of files in sub-folders but it would be a tiresome task to add up the numbers. Probably you are correct that all files are referenced. However it is unfortunate that there seems to be no simple way of determining for sure that all are referenced except by inference
