Create sessions without copying / moving images ?
Hi, I am LR user trying out C1 and I am interested in working with sessions (rather than catalogs). I would like to keep my images on the (external) drive, as I don’t want have duplicates on different locations. Is it possible to edit images without having to import / move or copy them?
many thanks in advance for your help!

Yes you can do that if you wish.
In the Library tool just use the System Files section to browse to the folder containing the files you wish to edit and the images will appear in the browser. Make the folder a "Favourite" if you want to have the session remember the folder for future re-use.
Do NOT open the folder in the Finder facility.
To retain the edits C1 will create a Subfolder in the folder that contains the images and within that folder will be all that it requires to record your edit instructions and the thumbnails and preview files prepared for rapid display in the future.

Many thanks for your quick reply. This seems to work well - thank you!
Will the edits be in a format that can be read independent of C1 (e.g. Photoshop)?
Kind regards,

The edits, as with most products unless they copy Adobe and continue to copy any Adobe product developments, will not be actively readable by other applications and are unlikely to give the same results even if they were readable at a basic level. The instruction only apply for the tools available within Capture One.
In general, without some sort of effort undertaken to make an interpretations tool, that would be the same for all editors - sometimes even different products from the same developer.
It's worth noting that Photoshop is not a RAW file developer and requires, for RAW files, some pre-preparation even within the Adobe family of photo editing products.
However is is possible to "export" an image from Capture One using the Photoshop .psd file type to make it readable (with edits applied), in Photoshop.

Many thanks indeed! A .psd export should be excellent. Great to have such swift and elaborate advice!

Perhaps things have changed since this was originally posted, but when I select the folder using the Library tool, nothing happens (other than it highlighting), is there an additional step that I am missing?
I can get it to work if I navigate to a subfolder which contains actual images, but I cannot seem to use the top level folder that has all my images already organised using my own folder structure.
Is there a different way to go about this? And still accomplish the same thing of not having it move the files?

No, but there is no need to to make any changes to your file structure, you just have to navigate to the specific folder containing the picture you want to edit, I think this is associated with CO knowing where to put the sidecar file containing the edits and previews. I have been using this way of working for years.

Thanks for your reply Dave!
How do you browse through your images in that case ie: for weeding out the bad ones and choosing keepers/ ones for editing?
