    Hi Maryna,

open a raw file from Capture One to edit in Silver Efex 3 (or another app Nik Collection 4) don´t apply changes.

    Thank you.

    Hi Antonio,

Please note that Capture One is non-destructive, so when you make adjustments to your image they are not applied to your RAW file image.

Please see the following article about making adjustments:

    Making-image-adjustments-with-an-external-editor

Let us know if it worked.

Latest Windows 10, latest C1 (subscription) and the latest Nik v4...

I would like to add to this thread. I installed Nik v4 (and also the most recent update) and in both instances, Silver Efex Pro 3 will not actually save the file on the disk. Silver Efex acts like it is saving, provides the progress bar, but does not update the file. I looked in the Silver Efex log file and I saw nothing out of the ordinary in it. I asked DXO why this did not work and here is what they told me:

"Unfortunately, we have never supported the use of our software with Capture One:

    https://support.dxo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115015298887

Should it have worked in the past, we recommend contacting Capture One to see if they plan on adding compatibility with our new version as well."

The latest Color Efex pro 4 (which is very nearly the same as the v3 version does save the file and update it.

That's interesting – that Color Efex Pro 4 works (and it did for me, just now, thanks) – but that Silver Efex Pro 3 doesn't.  I'll try the others.

Dfine2 might do, but it's difficult to tell.  I don't think that any other elements of Nik 4 work properly with the Edit with system.

I have submitted another ticket with DxO support and attached a number of log files from Silver Effects Pro and Viveza in Nik 4 Collection  When called using C1 'Edit With', a TIF file is created and sent to SEP or Viveza, then changes made to the TIF file, clicking 'Apply' does not update the TIF file.  Alsio, the "FIle->Save' menuitem is not available. The log show a number of warnings and errors, the last of which state:

[2021-06-18 07:17:17.510] [qt] [warning] <host/HostApplicationControl.cpp:131><ui::common::HostApplicationControl::applySingleImage> Requested host app control from application that should be standalone!
    [2021-06-18 07:17:17.582] [DxO] [error] <DxOCorrectionEngine> ComputeSubImage couldn't get a valid output image.
    [2021-06-18 07:17:17.582] [app] [error] Can't process scaled for task GeneralProcessingTask [ Params: [ type: Loupe priority: SubImage(1000) target: Output customID: area: (x=5735, y=4518, w=225, h=112) ] ]

Looks like SEP and VIveza ahould be running as standalone but DxO does not open them as standalone if C1 (and/or On1) are active. I'll post a couple of workarounds in next submission

C1 to Nik4 Collection, specifically Silver Effects pro and Viveza:

    1. If you have a copy of Photolab (2,3, or 4), open it along with Capture One. From Capture One, select an image and 'Edit With" then select Silver Effects Pro or Viveza.  Make changes in SEP or Viveza then click 'Apply'.  The tif file will be updated in C1.

    2. Open Silver Effects Pro and Viveza and standalone applications then open Capture One. Select image, 'Edit With' select SEP or Viveza. SEP and Viveza will now have the 'File->Save' menuitem available. Click Save, And the image will be saved in C!. You may have to wait for SEP or Viveza to reopen the file and display 'Things to know about TIF files' and click okay.  As long as SEP and Viveza remain open, calling from C1 will have the 'File' meunitem available.

Gerald, I have both Photolab 2 and 4 and I followed your steps without success. I noticed that when I use Photolab and SEP, or any Nik for that matter, it sticks a _Nik to the end of the file name (prior to the .tif). I am wondering if that is causing issues. However, a sync in C1 does not see any new files after I use SEP unsuccessfully.

I tried opening C1 and then Photolab, and also Photolab and then C1. I did the 'Edit with', created an uncompressed 16-bit tiff and used SEP. SEP opened the .tif file I changed it and then did the Apply. No dice. C1 did not see the update.

I also tried your second suggestion. I opened SEP standalone. I then opened C1 and the the Edit with for SEP. It opened a second version of SEP executable and when I applied from in there, I got nothing updated in C1.

If I use Photolab and go to the C1 location where I did create a .tiff file, and then open the .tif file in Photolab, and then use SEP in the Nik Collection in Photolab, and then apply changes, it does create a new blah_blah_nik.tif file in C1 location. I can then sync in C1 and see this new .tif file.

This is all under Windows 10

Kevin, I am running Mac Catalina. So far calling applications using Capture One 'Edit With' some Nik 4 Collection app except for Silver Effects Pro and Viveza (note: no workarounds followed with legacy apps), the TIF file created by C1 is updated except for HDR Effects which creates a new TIF with HDR added to the file name, and the changes are applied.  I checked the log file folder and no log files were created when accessing the legacy apps contained in the Nik 4 Collection.

On the Mac when SFX is opened standalone and called from C1 via 'Edit With', another instance of SFX is not opened. Also, with no apps running I can use Finder (same as Windows Explorer) and 'Open With' a TIF file which opens SFX as a standalone app. The changes are appled the the TIFF file.

More testing: when a Nik Collecton app is called from Photolab, a file is create contains 'Nik' in the filename. When HDR is called, the results are returned to a file with Nik and HDR in the filename.  This allows multiple files to be converted to TIF and sent to HDR Efx to merge into one HDR image.  Still works with C1.

If you call SFX from C1 with SFX open as a standalone app does the standalone instance close when the second instance is opened?

I found a work around for Windows 10. First I created a very simple batch file with this as the contents:

    "C:\Program Files\DxO\Nik Collection\bin\Silver Efex Pro 3.exe" %1

That worked if I use the Browse option in C1 with under Edit with or Open with.
But what a pain that is to do a browse every time I want to use SFX. So I downloaded a very simple free piece of software, Batch to Exe. It passed all of my virus and malware inspections. Came from here:

    https://battoexeconverter.com/

I then used it to quickly turn my .bat file to a tiny .exe file. I then did the trick required to get things to show up in C1's list of plugins.

Using Windows Explorer to find a .tif file on my drive. Then right click on the file and do an "Open with" and search about three or four levels deep in the Windows "what to you want to use to open this with" dialog boxes until I got to the option that would let me browse to the tiny exe I created. Once I did that, I then went into C1 plugins and found my tiny exe and added it to the plugins to be used.

It works and it runs the SFX as a standalone program and allows me to use the SFX File->save.

DxO's  latest response after sending log files with errors and warnings even when using 'Supported software':

    Thanks for your patience.

Unfortunately we can't assist any further with this this issue, since it relates to unsupported third party software.  The Nik Collection still works correctly with the additional software which is listed as compatible, so all we can advise in this case is to contact the developers of those other programs and ask them to work on improving compatibility with DxO's products.

In turn we will record this ticket as requesting support for Capture One and On1 in future versions.

    Kind regards,

Steve - DxO Labs Support Team 1

I figured they (DXO) were done with it since they have that list of supported software and C1 has never been on it.
I did use SFX yesterday, using the "fix" I came up with for Windows. Worked just fine, so I guess I do not need a fix from DXO.

I have had mixed responses from DxO depending on the support person.  After attaching log files showing errors and warnings generated by Nik SEP and Viveza, even with called as PS plugin or from Photolab 4, Fernando said he would contact me when a work around was discovered. Also, I have since heard from Steve (see earlier post) stating that since Nik 4 works with Photoshop so I cannot get a refund, but he did send a link to Nik 3 collection.  I sent Steve the log files showing the errors and warnings when using PS -> SEP.  I also pointed out that one workaround (with Mac at least) is to modify C1's property file so the application name is different (e.g. puting hypens or under scores between 'Capture' and 'One') works fine with SEP and Viveza. So why is Nik looking for Capure One?

All things considered, I cannot find many benefits with SFX or DxO with the poorly tested release.  Capture One can be used to produce as good a black and white image as Silver Effects.
