Nikon Z9 RAW (NEF) High-Efficiency

Implemented

@benjamin brolet if it’s minor, getting it done shouldn’t be a problem.

Nikon isn’t having trouble selling the cameras. They are back ordered through the year. Having the best option for all those users would only be good for C1.

Skylum is working on it for Luminar, and they are based in Kiev, Ukraine. If they can do it, Phase one should have no trouble at all.

What I mean by minor is that I’m sure the feature is already implemented in an future update but they are working on other stuff and it will be pushed at the same time

It shouldn’t be a purchased update. The camera and format was available in 2021.

I reached out to IntoPix, developers of TicoRAW. They said that several of the RAW processors had reached out to them, but that it would be up to Nikon to announce who. So, for whatever that is worth, support does seem to be on someone’s agenda.

New update from C1 maybe they have implemented it 😁

Nope not implemented, maybe they get money by the cfexpress manufacturers

It's extraordinarily short-sighted to leave the format out of Capture One. In fairness, judging by Adobe's less than stellar initial implementation, maybe it's something that takes some time to do well. However, it means Nikon has a camera with only one format of any use. Touting the wonders of new formats is pointless if none of the major software companies bother to support it. I'd pin part of this on Nikon as well. To suppose that their customers will suddenly start using their software is asinine, and it's just not going to happen. So our only option is to ignore the formats, which is a sad and apathetic use of innovative technology. I could switch to Lightroom if I had to and move my database over if they started supporting it, but that product has a ways to go to best Capture one.

I think Capture One's refusal to divulge its plans is nonsensical for supporting camera formats. For one, it's not a feature that they want or need to keep competitors from knowing ahead of time; it's an understanding with your customers that you will support new cameras. It is just plain silly to lump it in as a "feature secret" like panoramic stitching, HDR or keystone correction. Everyone who owns camera software expects new raw format support and innovative or exciting features like stitching or focus stacking; I can understand the desire to keep secret.

In summary, it would be helpful if the folks at Capture One came forward and stated whether or not they plan to support it. If the answer is yes, I don't have to consider the Adobe route if and when they support it. If it's no, I will never use the new formats, and it's a wasted opportunity to help your customers. I also point the finger at Nikon too. They should make the information available to software vendors and stop this stupid proprietary format business. The only people that would stick with their software as their only software package are hobbyists or those not doing a lot of photography.....I, for one, don't have time to use two sets of software.

@scott fairbairn It’s not a Nikon secret (any more than NEF is).  It is built using licensed TicoRAW format from IntoPix.  I am surprised that none of the RAW processors have licensed it and used it to offer a method of shrinking your RAW library.

As far as one useable format, well how many usable formats does Canon or Sony provide?

I do agree that supported cameras and formats should be something on a roadmap, though.  “We plan to support the following cameras on this timeline” is hardly going to take the world by storm.

Disclaimer: I have absolutely no knowledge or details on the relationships or business commitments to Nikon, Capture One or Adobe.

Is Capture One dragging their feet and simply ignoring their customer base for any information? Maybe. But another possibility is Capture One (and others) may be highly restricted in contractual agreements with Nikon or others not to say anything and may have other restrictions as well. For example, For Nikon to license the TicoRAW format, Nikon could have said, they'll do it but IntoPix can't license to Adobe or Capture One for X period. Companies want exclusivity all the time.

Is any of this true? Who knows. All I'm saying is there may be more to the situation than meets the eye.

@ Rich, considering that minor software supports it, i doubt it :)

I wondered if there were contractual agreements or copyright issues. However, it shouldn't be rocket science to say so; I've never heard of an NDA that didn't allow you to say something you didn't have to start with.

Verlon, I can't speak for Canon, but Sony has different raw formats(lossless, lossy compressed), and Nikon has had different sizes for raw formats.

I'm sorry, but the wall of silence about support does nothing to help their consumer. A simple, "Yes, we plan to support it in a future release," would suffice. Leaving your customer in the dark is rarely beneficial.

Getting to the point where I am going to take another look at Lightroom. They have supported HE* for months now, and have narrowed the gap between themselves and C1 in terms of functionality & features. Even if this is somehow not their fault, C1 needs to be in constant contact with their Nikon customers and letting them know what the problem is. If Nikon or Adobe is pulling some proprietary gamesmanship, TELL US! If that's the case, then we will put pressure on Nikon. It's either that Nikon and/or Adobe is playing games, or C1 has chosen to put more focus on other projects (like a tablet version of C1). As it stands, C1 is just expecting us to sit with our new, expensive cameras and wait without much hope. This is bad business.

Unless I misremember, C1 said in an earlier posting in this thread that they would be incorporating support for the HE formats. I don’t recall a target date stated, but I do recall a posting to that effect.

It will come, just not a priority for them :)

@scott fairbairn: Yes, C1 has expressed that they plan on supporting these formats "in a future version." That was quite a while ago. Too vague and too slow.

Looking at IntoPix, their technology is patented. Who knows, maybe IntoPix wants too much money from Capture One for licensing and they're still negotiating. Where is that money supposed to come from? Do they charge us for it? If so, how does that integrate into their license model? It could be complicated. Like I said before, who knows if any of this is reality.

I propose to send an e-mail every day to the service capture a the same constant e-mail by tens and hundreds of users they will be forced to act !!

I don’t think Nikon would ask for exclusive rights when they know most of their customers do NOT use CaptureNX. Also, they have a deal with Capture One for a Nikon only version. Finally, IntoPix has other customers using the same technology, and have already said as much.

It’s nice to see more engagement on this thread pushing for support.

We can guess all we want as to what the reasons are the high compression files aren’t supported yet but we really need CaptureOne to provide an update. Hopefully it’s more concrete than the official reply that “answered” this ticket. Currently, the feedback was shared with their product owners but they didn’t say whether it would make it into a future release.

I wonder if they continue to follow reported issues once they’ve been marked “answered”?

Itslike the prisoner's dilemma (2 or more prisoners, 1st one to talk gets a light sentence while the rest get the max.  If no one talks, they might all get away free, but you have to count on no one else talking).

Lightroom, Capture One, Luminar, DxO, On1, Aftershot, and so on:  The first one of you fools to support HE* NEF files (right) earns loyalty points.

It looks like someone has stepped up to the plate: ACDSee

    https://www.nikoncafe.com/threads/nikon-z9-raw-file-support.331229/

But it is Windows only.  It is nice to see a company that brags about their commitment to supporting new cameras though.

Let's hope that we do not have to wait till Capture One 23, which most likely will not be a free upgrade.

Well. I just downloaded the trial of ACDSee. Best I can discern, it will allow you to view the embedded JPEG in HE or HE* raw files, but when it comes to "Develop" or "Edit" them, FUBAR. Perhaps I'm missing something.

But: if it actually does HE or HE*, contrary to how it seems to me, I might consider trying it...

    This is from C1 Support:

"Support for HE raw files of the Z9 is currently out of our hands as Nikon has not provided yet the SDK necessary to work with those files is not available for M1 computers and implementing the Intel-based one will turn into a suboptimal performance. We are waiting for Nikon to deliver the SDK and we'll be able to implement it shortly after that."

@ Rich Thanks for the info, i dont understand why they are giving different answers to people or why they cant just inform us on this topic

    Thanks for the info !

@Rich - Every time I hear from C1 it creates more questions than answers. So they are ultimately only going to provide HE* support on M1 systems? What SDK did Lightroom use (many months ago)?? Will there ultimately be support for non-M1 computers? Would sub-optimal support not be better than NO support, until then? SO fed up with the games these companies play at the customers' expense.

Seems like that would be easy to verify. Surely someone on this list has a contact with Nikon. NPS should be good enough (but probably isn’t).

We already know Nikon licensed TiCoRAW. The should make it fairly straightforward. If one of the other companies manages it first, we may have a better answer.

Why wasn’t this being actively pursued before the camera came out?

Why aren’t these companies in contact with the major camera makers? I mean I get it with something like Apple Photos, but for DxO or CaptureOne, this is a big part of operations. And I have to think Nikon would love to work with Phase One and Adobe on this.

But, if anyone knows who to bug at Nikon, I am prepared to email them.

I'm a Nikon Professional Services member. I asked about the Z9 compatibility issues, here is their response:

So, until Capture One supports Tethered Lossy capture, it's either Nikon's Tether NX (not great) or JPEG only.

Peter Walker, in other words, "use our software, because we have no intention of assisting third parties to make our products better."

It's not as if there are dozens of third party software companies to work with.

@Peter Walker I am not NPS, and my response was similar but even more noncommittal.

Interestingly, it appears to be the same support agent, so maybe she is hearing enough to know it is important to us.  And at least Nikon did the courtesy of getting back with me quickly.

The other guys announced support for HE and HE* in todays update.  It is no longer listed as 'preliminary.'  Don't send me to them, please.

Please update this! Just did a job with HE compression.  Now there's no way to view/process files in C1.  What?!
