I just found the same issue, I tried to import some jpg files from my desktop and they don't show up in the import window. They are fine once imported. I haven't seen this while importing from a card.

You can right click on the folder and select import... and it will bring up the import dialog. The import will skip those images already imported to the catalog and only add the new ones.

Maybe your preview image size is set small, that could cause the images to look bad in C1.

So how do you restore a catalog that contains images from a catalog backup ?

You can create recipe that will export and open PS but you still have to import afterwards. I too hope this will be addressed in a later release.
