Might be worth a fresh start and see if clearing out the data may fix this issue:

    https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002402377-How-to-uninstall-Capture-One-

I would recommend copying the files to another drive, make sure you have a backup of any catalogues etc

This will clear C1 from your system, download a program called Find Any File and run it, type in captureone into the search field and hold down the Option key and click Find All, enter your password and the program will search your HD for any files with the name captureone in them, delete or move the files you think match.

    Reboot

Reinstall and see if the issue exists

Hi James, at first that did not help.  Ive noticed it is only Sony ARW files i have the problem with.  So I have now updated the MacBook with the last OS ( 11 Big Sur ).  Totally de-installed Capture One ( including all files using your process ), downloaded new DMG file and re-installed from start. Much faster I have to say.  Partial resolution, it no longer freezes now, but exported JPG and PSD have a lot of "noise" and "Artefacts".  Almost like missing pixels...  Other RAW files work perfect.....  Only Sony.  These are coming from a Sony Alpha A7r.  Previous versions of Capture One ( 11 was the last I had ) worked fine.

Hi Alan, i think it may be best to report this to the support team via the "Submit a Request" It may be a problem with the RAW decoding. Sorry I can't help anymore

I have a stable Capture One 12 installation running on three different computers.  At least two of them (pre-T2 MacBook Pro and iMac) are running macOS 10.14.6 and I can't get Capture One 21 to run on them without it immediately crashing, no matter what I do.  I've tried de-installing and reinstalling multiple times, creating new catalogs, etc., etc. without any success.  This is a major issue and I can't buy an upgrade unless it's resolved (and quickly).

Most of my files are scans, Nikon (raw) files, and iPhone (pre-11).

I've let the app send crash reports (many of them) back to Phase One.

Thank you to James Grove for suggesting using Find Any File.  I did what he suggested and it worked.

I upgraded my older version of Capture One to version 21 last week and since then, managed to only edit one image. I am Using Canon RAW images from 5D IV camera.

Once I started a new session with 20 images, I have experienced multiple freezing of my Mac 10.13 with 8GB ram and also experienced multiple unexpected shut downs of Capture One 21.

Can someone please advise what I should do to fix this problem.

    Regards

    Peter

Hard disk or SSD?  My guess is that if using a system with hard disk disk and with only 8GB of RAM your system is spending more time swapping than doing actual work.  That would look like a freeze.

    That is just a guess.

Thanks for your prompt response Marco

I am using a HDD and that may well be part of he problem as you pointed out.

My system is an iMac Retina 4K High Sierra ver. 10.13,6 with Processor 3,1 GHz core i5 Ram 8GB 1867MHz DDR3 Graphics Intel Iris Pro 6200 1536 MB

Your comment " only 8GB of RAM" makes me think that my system does not comply with the system requirements to run Capture One 21. Please could you be so kind to take a look at what I have and where it is lacking.

Also, if I need to change anything (apart from the HDD), what would be the right specifications or your recommendations to get Capture One 21 to work efficiently.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

OddS. posted the link I was going to mention.  Your system meets the minimum requirements.  I know nothing about graphics cards and don't know how well your card can drive a 4K monitor.

One thing you can look at is memory use.  Open up a terminal window and enter the command "vm_stat".  The last three lines of the output are Pageouts, Swapins, and Swapouts.   Ideally they will be zero.   If not zero, especially if you have many Swapins and Swapouts, additional RAM can improve your overall machine performance.   I don't know if that will help specifically with Capture One shutdowns or crashes.

Thank you to Marco and OddS for your responses.

So it appears that the minimum specification is not suitable for the new release of CO 21.

I started my journey with Capture One many years ago with version 11 running on that minimum specification and had no issues at all. So perhaps the Capture One team needs to upgrade their minimum spec to suit each new release. That way, loyal users like myself will not be disappointed after upgrading.

However, now that i have already upgraded to version 21, I am forced to purchase the latest iMac in order to get the software to run. The best available iMAC model in my country is a 27 inch i7 8 core 3.8HHz processor with 5K monitor that comes standard with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

Does anyone know if that will work or do I still have to upgrade the RAM?

    Peter,

Check the log files to see if they offer any clues about the specific problems you are seeing.

I think you might be stretching things at the current spec running a 4k monitor but I'm not a Mac user so my comment is based on the recommendation in the referenced document and observation of both Mac and Windows users of the forum who run 4k (or, worse, 5k) screens.

There are some other factors related to internal operational user-level data and whether that has successfully converted, copied or been replaced during the upgrade processing but any problems in that area may start to come to light via the log files.

    Thank you SFA.

Yes I agree that using the minimum specification is not going to work well with a 4K monitor for version 21. It did however work perfectly for years on the older version of Capture One.

I will look at the log files as suggested but am almost certain that the HDD is not able to cope with the high rate of swapping so that is why I am looking at upgrading to a Mac with SSD and faster processor.

Opinion: 8GB is not enough RAM.  I have 32GB in my 2019 iMac which is currently adequate for my needs.  I still have two empty slots so can add more memory in the future if needed.  I've read of many who write they get good results with 16 GB.

Thanks Marco. Then I will opt for 16GB or more.
