Live for Studio Network Requirements and Recommendations
Live for Studio works on a local network without an internet connection. Often referred to as LAN (Local Area Network) or WLAN (Wireless LAN), it's a type of network that connects devices within a limited area, such as a home or an office network. While it's possible to create a LAN network over the internet by establishing a Virtual Private Network (VPN), this is considered an advanced setup.
Here are some general recommendations:
- Use a stationary or portable wireless router to create a local network, serving as a central hub for connecting your devices. While tethering your Mac and iPad to an iPhone is an option, we don't consider it a stable network solution.
- Connect your Mac or iPad to the central networking device, such as a router or switch, using Ethernet cables or Wi-Fi.
- Note that certain security measures, like firewalls and access controls, may potentially interfere with Live for Studio connections. We haven't encountered any issues with default router setups during internal testing.
- Optimize the placement of your router and adjust its antennas. Position the router centrally, away from walls and obstructions, and elevate it for optimal signal coverage. Avoid proximity to other electronic devices that could cause interference.
- Use newer Wi-Fi standards operating on the 5GHz frequency, such as Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), for improved network performance. In some cases, older standards operating on the 2.4GHz frequency might offer better range. Remember that the Mac and the iPads should be on the same network.
- Minimize interference from other wireless devices by selecting less crowded Wi-Fi channels.
- Consider using Access Points or Mesh Systems if you need to extend your wireless signal. Range Extenders may not provide optimal performance.
Connect Live for Studio
Share Collections in Capture One Studio
Ensure that your Mac and iPad are connected to the same local network.
The first time you start Capture One Studio, macOS will ask if you want to allow this app to accept incoming network connections. If you denied the request, you can change this by going to the macOS System Settings, Network, Firewall, Options menu.
In Capture One Studio, find the Live for Studio Tool in the Tether Tool Tab.
Use the Collection drop-down menu to select a folder or a collection that you want to share. With the release of Capture One 16.4.5 and Live for Studio 1.1.0, you can now share multiple collections, such as All Albums and All Favorites, and view all shared collections in the iPad app. You can also switch the shared collections on the fly.
Use the Password field if you want to password protect the shared collection.
If you click the three dots (⋯) button, Network Settings, you can view your Mac's local IP address and specify the network port you want to use for the Live for Studio connection.
Click Start Sharing. The server will use the current Catalog or Session name.
Connect the iPad in Live for Studio
Ensure that your Mac and iPad are connected to the same local network.
The first time you start Live for Studio on an iPad, iPadOS will ask if you want to allow this app to find and connect to devices on your local network. If you denied the request, you can change this by going to the iPadOS Settings, Privacy & Security, Local Network menu.
When you start Live for Studio on your iPad, you'll see a list of available collection on the Shared Projects screen. The collection you shared in Capture One Studio is named after your Session or Catalog. Tap the document name that you wish to connect to.
Alternatively, to Connect Manually by entering the local IP and the port number, tap the network node button next to the Settings (gear) button at the top right corner of the Shared Projects screen. In Capture One Studio, go to the Live for Studio Tool, three dots (⋯) button, Network settings menu to find your Mac's local IP and port number.
Live for Studio Settings
On the Shared Project screen, tap the Settings (gear) button to access the app settings.
There's an option to Prevent Sleep and links to find help or rate the app.
Live for Studio Troubleshooting
- Ensure that your Mac and iPad are connected to the same local network.
- The first time you start Capture One Studio, macOS will ask if you want to allow this app to accept incoming network connections. If you denied the request, do the following:
- Close Capture One.
- Go to the macOS System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options menu.
- Allow incoming connections for 'com.captureone.captureone16'.
- Alternatively, you can try completely disabling the macOS Firewall or reinstalling Capture One.
- The first time you start Live for Studio on an iPad, iPadOS will ask if you want to allow this app to find and connect to devices on your local network. If you denied the request, do the following:
- Go to the iPadOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network menu.
- Allow Live for Studio.
- Note that certain security measures, like firewalls and access controls, may potentially interfere with Live for Studio connections. We haven't encountered any issues with default router setups during internal testing.
Live for Studio Known Issues
- Removing the Live for Studio Tool in Capture One Studio while sharing does not stop the sharing process.
- Dragging and dropping the Live for Studio Tool from one document to another leaves the session open.
- Deleting a shared album without stopping the sharing causes the Live for Studio Tool to malfunction.
- In Multiple Folders follow mode, shooting in a different folder navigates to the last image of that folder.
- Creating a clone variant in an album while in follow mode redirects the user to All Albums and the last image
Live for Studio FAQ
Q: Is Live for Studio available for iPhone?
A: Currently Live for Studio is only available as an iPad app. We are hoping to release an iPhone version in Summer 2024. Note the iPad app also works on Apple Silicon Macs.
Q: Are you planning on developing an Android version of Live for Studio?
A: Currently we are not planning for an Android version of the app. If this is something you think we should look into, please let us know on the Capture One ideas portal.
Q: How many devices can I use Live for Studio on?
A: There are no limitations on how many devices can join a session via the Live for Studio app. Note the App Store limits users to a maximum of 10 devices on the same Apple ID. However, any iPad connected to the same network as the host can connect to the Live session regardless of the Apple ID being used.
Q: Can images on a Capture One Live session be viewed with Live for Studio?
A: No. However, the same album or folder can be shared concurrently across both Capture One Live and Live for Studio.
Q: How is Live for Studio different from Capture Pilot?
A: Whilst Capture Pilot and Live for Studio are both designed for private network use, they both cater to different needs within the photography production environment. Capture Pilot is a versatile legacy application that allows photographers and their teams to collaborate, review composition, and remotely control cameras – suitable for both individual photographers and teams. Live for Studio is specifically tailored for large-scale productions, focusing on collaboration with an emphasis on high stability and performance, ensuring seamless integration and workflow in demanding production settings.
Q: What are the future plans for Capture Pilot?
A: We are no longer developing Capture Pilot. However, it will remain available until Capture One mobile and Live for Studio have definitively met our customers' requirements for camera control and collaboration.
