Capture One 16.7.0 introduces Retouch Eyes, a dedicated tool for enhancing eyes in portraits. This feature automatically detects the eyes in your image and offers intuitive controls to make them stand out naturally. With separate adjustments for the iris and sclera, you can refine the look of each eye while maintaining a balanced, lifelike result.

What is Retouch Eyes?
Retouch Eyes tool enhances portraits by adjusting the iris and sclera:
- Iris enhancement deepens and enriches the eye color, keeping shadows and highlights intact.
- Sclera brightening lightens the whites of the eyes and reduces yellow tones and redness, making them appear cleaner without removing blood vessels. The tool softens the appearance of veins by muting their redness, rather than removing them.
This tool helps create vivid yet natural-looking eyes with just a few simple adjustments.
Retouch Eyes tabs and sliders
The Retouch Eyes tool has three tabs:
-
Both: Affects both eyes equally and contains two sliders:
- Iris: Enhances color richness and depth in both irises.
- Sclera: Brightens and neutralizes both sclerae.
-
Left: Applies independent adjustments to the left eye only:
- Iris Offset: Increases or decreases iris enhancement for the left eye.
- Sclera Offset: Adjusts sclera brightness and color tone for the left eye.
-
Right: Mirrors the Left tab with individual controls for the right eye:
- Iris Offset
- Sclera Offset
These offset controls allow you to fine-tune each eye individually, compensating for differences in lighting or eye position. You can still control the overall enhancement level using the sliders in the Both tab.
Save Retouch Eyes in a Style or as a Preset
You can save your Retouch Eyes settings as a Preset for quick access across other images. Open the Preset menu and choose Save Custom Preset…, then check the Retouch Eyes sliders you'd like to include and click Save. After saving, you can apply the Preset to other images from the same menu.
Retouch Eyes adjustments can also be included in a Style, alongside other image edits. To create a Style, go to the Styles and Presets tool, click the ellipsis (•••) icon, and select Save Custom Style. Tick the sliders you want from the Retouch Eyes tool (note: individual eye offsets are not included), then hit Save.
Note: Individual Iris and Sclera offsets (Left and Right tabs) are not saved with Styles. All adjustments will be included as an Eye Brightening option.
FAQ
Can I remove blood vessels with Retouch Eyes?
No, the tool doesn't remove blood vessels but does reduce their redness, making them less noticeable.
Why aren't the eyes detected correctly?
If the tool fails to detect eyes, try adjusting the crop, exposure, or contrast. Sometimes small changes help the tool locate facial features more accurately.
The effect looks too strong or too subtle. What should I do?
Use the sliders in the Both tab to adjust the overall intensity, and the Left or Right tabs to fine-tune each eye individually.
Do the individual eye settings carry over in a saved Style?
No, only the overall adjustments from the Both tab are saved. Individual offsets for each eye are not included in Styles.
