QUESTION
Why has Photoshop (Topaz Photo AI, Affinity, DxO PureRAW or other) disappeared from the Open with/Edit with list on the menu on my Windows/macOS computer?
ANSWER
The Open With menu list is populated based on the file type associations of the operating system.
After updating Photoshop or any other app to the latest version, you will have to follow the steps below in case you do not see it on the list of Open With/Edit With menu.
Windows
You may try opening Settings>Apps>Default apps and reset it to Microsoft recommended defaults:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Scroll down and click Reset to restore Microsoft’s recommended defaults.
- Then manually assign the desired app to the relevant file types (e.g., .PSD, .JPG).
After you set the default applications as desired, Windows will associate this file extension (e.g. .JPG) with the desired third-party app and you will then see this app in Capture One for this image type.
Note: If the desired app is not set as default on Windows, Capture One cannot display it in the 'Open With' list.
Tip: You may also do a quick search in the Default Apps menu (Windows 11) if the app has a file association by typing it in the search:
macOS
As on Windows, Capture One on macOS relies on the operating system to populate the “Open With” list. If Photoshop, Affinity Photo, or another external editor doesn’t appear in that menu, it may not yet be registered by macOS as a valid app for the file type you’re trying to open (e.g., .PSD).
To associate a specific file type — like .PSD — with an application:
- Control-click (or right-click) on a .PSD file in Finder.
- Select Get Info.
- In the Open with section, choose your preferred app (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) from the dropdown menu.
- Click Change All… to apply this setting to all files of that type.
Note: It may be worth clicking the “Change All…” button to make that app the default for all files of that type, if that’s needed. In some cases, you may need to try this more than once, as there could be different underlying file type variants (e.g., PSD vs PSB or legacy PSD formats).
For further reference, see this official Apple guide on setting default apps.
Once the app is correctly associated, it should appear in Capture One’s “Edit With” or “Open With” menu after restarting the software.
