Any reason why my CO21 might be so laggy on my iMac (i5 Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019)

There is a considerable delay between moving a slider or using a brush and seeing any effect. Surely my machine is capable of running this without such lag?Any ideas what might be the cause?
