Introducing Capture One Studio and Live for Studio
Capture One Studio is a new tier in our desktop product lineup. It includes all the features of Capture One Pro, introduces new Studio features, and integrates some features that were previously available for Capture One Enterprise users only.
For details, see About Capture One Studio.
Live for Studio is a new, free iPad companion app designed to complement Capture One Studio on macOS and enhance on-set collaboration. Share folders or albums from Capture One Studio and anyone can view, follow, rate, and color-tag images on an iPad. All on the same local network, no internet required.
For details, see About Live for Studio.
New features and functionality
Client Viewers (Studio)
With Client Viewers, you can create up to three additional independent Viewer windows in Capture One Studio for your collaborators without affecting your workflow. There are three Client Viewer modes: pinning an image variant, displaying the primary variant currently selected in Capture One Studio, or displaying an image variant captured last during tethering.
For details, see Client Viewers (Studio).
AI Crop (Pro, Studio)
AI Crop allows you to automatically align composition across images. It's part of The Crop Tool in Capture One Pro and a dedicated AI Crop Tool with more controls in Capture One Studio.
For details, see AI Crop (Pro, Studio).
Multiple Compare Variants (Studio)
In Capture One Studio, up to 11 Compare Variants can be shown in the Viewer at the same time.
For details, see Compare Variant (Pro, Studio).
New Tokens (Studio)
Image Parent Folder Name and Image Grandparent Folder Name tokens are now available for batch renaming and exporting.
For details, see Tokens and their definitions.
Save Destination
Send your RAW files to the computer and to your SD cards, or only send JPEGs to the computer for a faster experience. The most commonly used combinations are now available in the Camera Tool selector, often a subset of what the camera can do. If you wish for something custom, you will be able to set it in the Camera Settings Tool.
Works with Canon, Nikon and Sony camera models.
For details, see Camera Settings Tool.
Fujifilm tethering improvements
We updated our implementation of tethering for recent Fujifilm cameras. Capture One 16.4.0 brings two major benefits:
- Live View is now significantly smoother and higher quality.
- Dual control is enabled, allowing you to control your camera both from within Capture One but also from the buttons and dials of the camera itself.
Fujifilm models with updated Live View:
- X-H2
- X-H2s
- X-T5
- GFX-100II
Sony tethering improvements
Use menus instead of steppers to adjust certain camera settings, such as ISO. This change eliminates the need to click the plus or minus button repeatedly to navigate between low and high ISO values.
And in addition to Save Destination, you can now access a wider range of camera settings directly from the Camera Settings Tool, provided they are supported by the camera model:
- Capture
- JPEG/HEIF switch
- Save Destination
- PC Save File Type
- PC Save Size
- File format, card
- RAW type, card
- Quality, card
- Image size, card
- Card free space indicator
- Setup
- APS-C setting
- Variable Shutter
- Status
- Lens name
2020 Sony camera models or later are expected to be affected by this update. Some of the models we tested:
- a9 II
- a9 III
- a7C II
- a7C
- a6700
- a7R IV
User Experience & Performance Improvements
In-App Updating
You can update Capture One directly within the application. You have the option to automatically download and install all updates silently in the background. On macOS, we can generate smaller and faster delta updates, while on Windows, it downloads and installs the entire application.
For details, see Download, install, and update Capture One.
Easier access to the Adjustments Clipboard
You can access the Adjustments Clipboard directly from the icon in the Toolbar by clicking the arrow button. This eliminates the need to find it in the Tool Tab, resulting in a smoother workflow with fewer clicks.
For details, see The Adjustments Clipboard overview.
GPU accelerated AI Masking
AI Masking now utilizes the GPU if it’s powerful enough, resulting in significant performance improvements:
- Subject and Background masking: up to 4x faster.
- AI Select performance (Preparing AI Mask): up to 18x faster
Additionally, a short animation will appear when clicking with the AI Select Cursor Tool to provide visual feedback, regardless of mask visibility settings.
For details, see AI Masking.
Faster Batch Rename and file management in Sessions on macOS
When working in Sessions, performance in file management has been improved:
- Batch renaming: up to 3x faster.
- Moving files between folders: up to 4x faster (8x faster with Viewer hidden).
- Deleting files: up to 3x faster (10x faster with Viewer hidden).
- Moving files to the Selects folder: up to 12x faster.
Camera support
- Sony ILX-LR1: file support, wired tethering, Live View.

Recommendations and limitations
Please note that the information provided here is subject to change and unintentional errors may occur. For any queries or further clarification, please contact Capture One Support at captureone.com/support
General guidelines
- Browsing folders containing unsupported image files may affect application performance.
- Previews from earlier versions of Capture One may be updated, which can affect the application performance the first time images are viewed in this version.
- Using a non-US laptop keyboard might require changing some of the standard keyboard shortcuts.
- Editing images in external applications other than Adobe Photoshop might result in unexpected behavior.
- Operating under virtualization software (e.g., Parallels, Hackintosh, etc.) may cause instability. These OS configurations are not recommended.
- Some cameras provide multishot functionality by way of multiple exposures or pixel shifting. In most cases, this functionality will not be available in Capture One. However, a single RAW file from the “stack” may be viewable and editable in Capture One (as if it was a shot in single Capture mode).
- Special or auxiliary modes (like pixel shift) are only supported if noted. If the information provided is incomplete or you need specific information pertaining to support in Capture One, kindly reach out to Capture One Support at captureone.com/support.
File support
- HEIC/HEIF support: Capture One supports HEIC/HEIF 8-bit files to the extent that the operating system supports the files. If you are on a Windows computer, you might need to download the two extensions “HEVC Video Extensions” and “HEIF Image Extensions” from Microsoft to enable support in Capture One.
- Capture One DNG colors: DNG files from camera models with native support in Capture One will per default have their native Capture One colors applied. DNG files from camera models that are not natively supported in Capture One will have generic DNG Standard colors applied. Adjustments and settings from other applications embedded in DNG files are not supported.
- Other file support: TIF/JPG/PSD/PNG files that are not in RGB color space cannot be adjusted within Capture One and will be read-only. Layered Tiff and PSD files can be supported for viewing purposes only. Reprocessing the image will result in a new flattened image.
- File size limitations: The smallest supported file for viewing has a minimum side of 16 pixels. The smallest supported file for editing has a minimum side of 512 pixels. The largest supported file is 715 megapixels or 65,000 pixels on the longest edge.
Known issues
- You can find a list of known bugs in a dedicated community forum topic titled Known bugs. Note that this list may not be up to date on the day of a new Capture One version release.
