When updating Capture One, you may notice that your custom workspace occasionally reverts back to the Default Workspace. While this can be surprising, it is an intentional behavior designed to ensure you don’t miss out on the latest tools and improvements.
What is the default workspace?
The Default Workspace is the pre-configured layout of tools, tabs, and panels that ships with every version of Capture One. It’s carefully curated by our product and design teams to:
Provide a clear and consistent starting point for all users.
Highlight the most commonly used features.
Ensure new features are visible and accessible immediately after an update.
Why does my custom workspace revert?
When major or service releases introduce new tools or changes to existing toolsets, Capture One will automatically reset to the Default Workspace. This ensures that:
New tools are visible right away – so you don’t miss improvements that could enhance your workflow.
UI changes are properly integrated – your custom layout may not be aware of new panels or controls.
A consistent experience for first-time users is maintained, so tutorials and documentation match what appears on-screen.
This reset typically happens after updates that add significant functionality (e.g., the Retouch Faces tool, new session folder options, or expanded cloud settings). Smaller maintenance updates generally won’t reset your workspace.
Can I still use my custom workspace?
Absolutely. After exploring the new Default Workspace:
You can reload your custom workspace from the Window > Workspace menu ().
If needed, you can update and re-save your custom workspace by clicking Workspace>Save Workspace so it includes any newly introduced tools.
In this screenshot, we show how you can load back your workspace (1) and save any new changes introduced into the same custom workspace (2).
Best practice
We recommend:
Keeping your custom workspace saved (and backed up) so it’s easy to restore.
Taking a moment after each update to explore the Default Workspace — this is the best way to discover new features.
Once you’re familiar with the updates, reload your preferred workspace and continue working as usual.
