Capture One 16.7.0 added support for PSB files. PSB (Photoshop Big) is Adobe Photoshop’s large document format, designed for working with images that exceed the size limits of standard PSD files. PSB supports file sizes over 2 GB and dimensions beyond what PSD can handle, making it ideal for high-resolution or layered workflows.

PSB support in Capture One
PSB is now available as both an import and export option, with functionality similar to PSD handling.
Importing PSB files
- Files up to 715 megapixels or 65,000 pixels on the longest edge are supported for editing.
- PSB files open flattened—layer data is not retained for editing in Capture One.
Exporting to PSB
To export in PSB, you should change the format to PSB in an existing Export Recipe or create a new one. This can be done in the Exporter tool tab>Export Format & Size.
- PSB can be exported in a bigger size that Capture One allows to edit, i.e. bigger than 715 megapixels or 65,000 pixels.
- Bit depth, color profiles, and metadata are preserved similarly to PSD export.
- PSB files can be exported in 8-bit or 16-bit depth.
- PSB files can include layers as alpha channel masks (use version 16.7.2 or higher)
FAQs
Why use PSB instead of TIFF or PSD?
PSB is ideal for extremely large images that exceed PSD or TIFF limits, especially for print, archiving, or composite workflows.
Do I need any special plugins or settings?
No. PSB support works out of the box with version 16.7.0 or later of Capture One.
Are layers preserved on import/export?
While layers are flattened on import, you can export PSB files with layers as alpha channels in version 16.7.2 and higher. See more here: Export masks as alpha channels in PSD and PSB files
