Learn how to:
- Apply ratings and color tags
- Utilize Sets for selecting the best images
- Sort images using Filters and Smart Albums
With the introduction of Capture One 20, the Select Next When option was introduced to help you with high-volume sorting tasks. Once enabled, Select Next When will automatically bring you to the next photo when star rating/color tagging. Find this new feature in Select -> Select Next When -> Star Rated/Color Tagged. Make sure that the Edit Selected Variants option is disabled. Select Next When also works with Sets (selections of images). Once you color tag/star rate the last image in a Set, it will automatically switch to the first image in the next Set of the same size.
N.B. Color tags are only supported in English – if you have tags in other languages, then you may find that they are not read or ignored by Capture One

The feature works as shown for photos, yet I cannot manage to apply ratings to videos though they show the box for the color rating and the dots for setting the stars. What do I do wrong?
Hi Mirko,
Thank you for your comment.
Please, make sure that the videos are of the supported file format. In Capture One, it is possible to work with QuickTime/Windows Media Player (macOS/Windows) compatible movies and codecs (depending on OS).
If your files are not supported, then editing them (including, rating and tagging) will not be possible.
Hey Lily,
thanks for coming back so quickly. I'm using C1 on my Mac Mini, the videos I took with my iPhone 11 do play within C1, thumbnails do show, so I would say they are supported.
Container: MOV // Codec: H.264 // Res: 1920x1080 // FPS:30
Yet, rating is not possible :( Is there a workaround to that?
Hi Mirko,
Those videos are compatible with Capture One but for playback only. It means that they are "view-only" and any adjustments are not applicable.
Hi, I have the same problem as Mirko with video clips. I imported a Lightroom catalog containing nearly 19k video clips which were all colour tagged with the same tags as in LR.
Unfortunately, despite being standard mov and mp4 files, all 19k are marked as 'view only' so I am unable to change the colour tags which have been assigned.
Surely there must be a workaround for this - if C1 can apply a colour tag on import from LR, obviously there must be a way to add tags to these files.
Hi, I have the same problem with video clips lacking the video tagging functionality from Lightroom. I gave up the idea of importing a Lightroom catalog but the issue remains with my occasional .MOV clips from a Fujifilm camera. Capture One 20 (Build 13.1.2.37) seems unable to tag or rate standard mov (e.g., H.264 encoded) files.
Hi, I have the issue that my PSD files that have been taken into Photoshop and back through C1 are not able to be colour tagged independently. Please assist.
Hi Graeme,
Thank you for your comment.
I have forwarded your request to the Support Team. They will get back to you shortly.
Want to be able to rate RAF (Raw) file as a '1' and the TIF (variant) as a '2' or such. How can I un-link them? V:20
Hi, how do you rate or tag multiple images at once? Thank you.
