How to Import a Media Pro Catalog into Capture One
You can migrate your Media Pro or Media Pro SE catalog into a Capture One Catalog to continue organizing and editing your images. The importer is not used in this instance, however, the underlying process is practically identical. Capture One creates variants for each of the original image files which are referenced in their original location (i.e., the original images are not moved, or duplicated). You can then continue with your typical workflow using a Capture One Catalog instead.
Steps:
- Open Capture One and either create a new Catalog (File > New Catalog) or open an existing one.
- Select File > Import Catalog > Media Pro Catalog...
- Navigate to and select your
.mpcatalog
file. - Capture One will begin importing. A progress dialog will show you the status.
- If some images are located on disconnected or missing drives, you will be prompted to Skip, Retry, or Stop.
Important: This functionality is only supported on macOS up to 10.14.6 (Mojave). macOS Catalina and later are not supported due to the removal of 32-bit application support.
What Data Is Imported from Media Pro
Collections:
- Catalog Sets in Media Pro become:
- Albums if the Set has no sub-Sets
- Groups if the Set has sub-Sets
- Sets with sub-Sets and images → Group with a sub-Album holding the images
Metadata:
- Star Ratings
- Color Labels (Media Pro's brown, cyan, and grey labels are ignored)
- Keywords (flat structure only, no hierarchy preserved)
- IPTC Contact: Creator
- IPTC Content: Headline, Caption, Category, Supplemental Categories, Keywords, Subject Code, Description Writer
- IPTC Image: Intellectual Genre, Scene Code, Location, City, State/Province, Country, ISO Country Code
- IPTC Status: Title, Job Identifier, Instructions, Credit, Source, Copyright
- IPTC Rights: Rights Usage Terms
Note: Capture One does not import custom fields or proprietary metadata unique to Media Pro.
Post-Import Best Practices
- Reconnect any offline image files using Capture One’s Locate feature.
- Review imported metadata for accuracy — especially complex IPTC fields.
- Reorganize Albums and Groups within the Catalog as needed.
- Consider switching to Capture One’s Sessions if your workflow is file-system-based rather than catalog-based.
