Feature walkthrough
Wireless tethering (Sony)
In Capture One 22 (15.3), you can tether several Sony cameras over Wireless Network. Tethered functionality is identical to tethering over USB. With Wireless Tethering you need one less cable on set, making for a new and much more dynamic tethered shooting experience.

How to use For optimal performance and stability, we recommend an AC/WiFi5 compatible router, connected via network or USB cable directly to the computer.
How to connect
Follow the below Sony-guide for setting up your camera to connect to the Wireless access point. Skip Step 3-4 and instead find your camera in the Camera Tool in Capture One. Save to card and computer when tethering (Canon)
Control where to save your images from the Camera Settings Tool when tethering a Canon camera. You can choose to save to card, computer, or both. This provides a convenient backup method, as well as enabling the user to see and review the images on the camera display. This functionality is also available when using wireless tethering.
Please note that enabling this feature might affect waiting time when connecting the camera, as your operating system will index the content of the card. The waiting time will increase with the number of images saved on the card at the time of connecting the camera.
Magic Eraser
A new type of Eraser has been added, providing similar functionality as the Magic Brush. You can now easily remove parts of masks on similar areas such as sky, skin etc.
The Magic Eraser is available from the Layers Tool and Cursor Tools. You can link the settings of the Magic Brush and Magic Eraser if needed. When linked, the Magic Brush and Magic Eraser will share the same settings for Size, Opacity, Tolerance, Refine Edge, and state of ‘Sample Entire Photo’
Tool Panel redesign
The Tool Panel has been redesigned to allow an easier and more predictable experience when browsing the interface, while making it even easier to customize. Additionally, the design will align with Capture One on iPad. The redesign consists of the following aspects:
- New, bigger icons for all Tool Tabs
- Labels below icons showing the name of the Tool Tab
- Labels are enabled by default, but can be turned off
- Fewer Tool Tabs by rearranging the tools
- Easy access to customization options from the three-dot icon
Capture One automatically makes backups of workspaces if something changes when updating. Your previous workspace can be accessed from the customization menu. The previous default workspace is also available from the Workspaces menu under the name “Default (Legacy)”.
Cloud Transfer
Cloud Transfer allows you to import into Capture One Pro images that have been uploaded to the cloud from the iPad app. You will need to be connected to the internet to use this feature.
The “Cloud transfer” button can be added to your main toolbar. Right-click on an empty space in the toolbar, select “customize”, drag and drop the icon into your workspace.
When clicking on “Cloud transfer,” you will get access to a menu, allowing you to import the photos from the cloud into your computer, in your sessions, or catalogs. You will have to select a location in your file system to download the files.
The import process will then start, and your photos (and their adjustments) will be available to you in Capture One Pro desktop. After making changes to photos on the iPad you will need to upload them again, and similarly you will have to import the files again in your desktop software.
General user experience improvements and tweaks
Crop Aspect Ratio saved per image
The Crop Aspect Ratio is now saved per image instead of globally in the Crop Tool. Returning to a previously edited image will now show the crop ratio applied to the image in the Crop Tool, providing a more intuitive workflow.
Style Pack functionality
Style Packs now show a confirmation when installing, preventing accidentally installing the same pack multiple times. Additionally, entire packs and folders can now easily be deleted from the Styles and Presets Tool by right clicking and selecting ‘Delete Folder’.
Style Brushes can now be included in Style Packs, enabling the possibility to create more flexible packs for Style creators. To include Style Brushes in a Style Pack, you need to divide the content into two parent folders:
Styles: The content of this folder will be installed in the Styles and Presets Tool
Style Brushes: The content of this folder will be installed in the Style Brushes Tool
You can create additional folders inside the two folders to organize the Styles and Style Brushes in the tools. Pack these two folders into a zip file, and rename the extension from ‘.zip’ to ‘.costylepack’.
Guided Tour
When launching Capture One for the first time as a new user a guided tour will appear with seven steps, highlighting important aspects to easily get started with Capture One.
Metal support on Intel
For hardware acceleration, OpenCL is replaced with Metal on Intel-based Mac computers. This will in the long run provide a more stable, performant application.
Support for multiple DPI scaling (Windows)
Capture One now retains similar physical size for the application layout when used with multiple monitors that have different DPI scaling
Capture One Live
Comments BETA (web only)
It’s now possible to leave comments in a Live Session. You can add and delete comments to individual images. Anyone with access to the Live Session can view them.
You can leave a comment by navigating to an image and pressing on the comment icon below the image.
At the current stage, comments cannot sync back to your desktop application.
Easier watermarking
You can add a watermark to an individual Live Session by choosing one of the Recipes, which can now be found in Capture One Live pop-up window. When you choose a Recipe, only the watermark settings are applied to the Live Session. The actual management of the Recipes takes place in the Exporter.
Keyboard shortcuts (web only released in March, 2022) You can now use keyboard shortcuts to star rate and color tag images in the Live Session.
Rating:
· Star rating: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, where 0 resets the rating
· Color tag: q, w, e, r, t, y, u, i, where Q resets the tag
Navigating:
· Left and right arrow key to navigate to the left and right
· Escape key to return to the gallery
New Live Session duration option
The duration of an individual Live Session can now be set to 1 month. You can choose to set different duration while starting a new Live Session.
Various improvements
Auto Keystone Guides placement
When using Auto Keystone, the Guides are now placed according to where Capture One detects lines used for the correction instead of placing them at generic positions.
Preview size recommendation
When using a preview size that is smaller than the monitor resolution, performance will be impacted. Capture One will in this case always use the raw file instead of the preview when displaying edits. This will increase the rendering time in the viewer for displaying both the image itself and the adjustments that are being applied.
To ensure optimal performance, the preview size will automatically be set to match the system setting when launching Capture One for the first time as a new user. For all users, additional information has been added to the Preview Preferences for better clarity of the optimal setting.
Rotation smoothness (Mac)
The smoothness of rotation and manual keystone correction is improved on Mac.

Recommended system requirements If working with high-resolution images and doing calculation-heavy adjustments we recommend the following:
· Intel CPU with 4+ cores
· 16+ GB of RAM
· Solid State Disk (SSD)
· NVIDIA or AMD GPU with 8GB+ RAM (or equivalent)
· Calibrated monitor with at least 1920x1200, 24-bit resolution at 96dpi
4k / 5k monitors
Due to the significant additional calculation overhead, systems using 4k/5k monitors will require additional resources in addition to the above-recommended spec (both in GPU and CPU power). For a professional experience, we recommend at least doubling the specification above for these configurations.
Installation
Capture One 22 is compatible with the earlier 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, 10.x, 11.x, 12.x versions. It is recommended to migrate images from 4.x, 5.x., and 6.x to version 8.x before opening them in 22. It is generally recommended that you only install one version of Capture One on any single computer. A single-user license allows up to 2 activations on computers that you own or of which you are the principal user. The license can be used with both Windows and Mac platforms. Multi-user licenses are also available from the Capture One web shop or from your retailer. Please read the release notes carefully before you install Capture One.
Install on Windows
To install the software please follow the procedure below.
- Download the application from the Capture One website
- Run the executable software install file (.exe).
- Carefully read and accept the license agreement presented.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Capture One will initiate the installation of Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.7 if you do not already have it.
Install on macOS
To install the software please follow the procedure below.
- Download the application from the Capture One website.
- Open the Capture One disk icon (.dmg).
- Carefully read and accept the license agreement presented.
- Drag the Capture One icon to the Applications folder.
- Open Capture One from your Applications folder.
Manual update to the latest version
It is important to keep Capture One software updated. After the activation and registration, you will usually receive a newsletter reminder that an update is ready for download, although it can be more convenient to choose Capture One -> Check for Updates (Help -> Check for Updates on Windows). If your Capture One application is downloaded from www.captureone.com, it will always be the latest version. You can also schedule an automated update if needed by navigating to Capture One -> Preferences (Edit -> Preferences on Windows).
Recommendations and limitations
For all users
- When you have disconnected a camera, do not reconnect a camera until the Camera tool status changes to "No Camera Attached".
- DNG support not optimized for some cameras.
For other camera users
- The following functionality is not supported for Fujifilm X-trans RAW files: processing/exporting to DNG.
Some cameras provide multishot functionality by way of (e.g.) multiple exposure or pixel shifting. In most cases, the functionality will not be available in Capture One, however, a single RAW file from the “stack” may be viewable and editable in Capture One (as if it was a shot in single Capture mode).
- For digital back users
- Unless otherwise specified for your Phase One camera system, do not open the shutter on the camera prior to opening the Live View window. Doing so will generate errors on the digital back after closing the Live View window. The recommended procedure for using Live View is to first open the Live View window, then open the shutter on the camera, use Live View as desired, when done, close the shutter on the camera, and close the Live View window.
Focus controls for iXR and iXA cameras are only supported by IQ and Credo backs.
Known issues
Find a list of known issues for Capture One at the time of shipping.
All users
- Browsing folders containing unsupported image files may affect application performance.
- Previews from earlier versions of Capture One may be updated. In some cases, this can affect the application performance the first-time images are viewed in this version of Capture One.
- Using a non-US laptop keyboard might be preferable to change some of the standard keyboard shortcuts.
- Editing images in external applications other than Adobe Photoshop might result in unexpected behavior.
- Operation under virtualization software (e.g. Parallels, Hackintosh, etc) may cause instability. We do not recommend you use these OS configurations.
Mac users
Live View over USB can stall without the use of a repeater
Windows users
- Windows drivers are required for some older models of Canon DSLR cameras to be able to shoot tethered. These drivers are available from Canon’s web site.
- Importing a catalog can result in the last picture not getting imported.
- Operation under RAMDisk by Dataram is known to cause issues with disk labeling. Capture One is not supported with this configuration.
- If you have Bonjour 2.0.3 installed, you may experience problems with Capture Pilot. Bonjour 2.0.2 (shipping with Capture One 9) and 2.0.4 (shipped with iTunes) have been tested to work with Capture Pilot. To check the version number of Bonjour, go to 'Control
Panel' and select ‘Programs and Features’. - TV/Raptr/RivaTuner installed along with some AMD devices can cause instability

HEIC/HEIF support
Capture One supports HEIC/HEIF 8-bit files to the extent that the operating system supports the files. If you are on a Windows computer, you might need to download the two extensions “HEVC Video Extensions” and “HEIF Image Extensions” from Microsoft to enable support in Capture One.
Capture One DNG colors
DNG files from camera models with native support in Capture One will per default have their native Capture One colors applied. DNG files from camera models that are not natively supported in Capture One will have generic DNG Standard colors applied.
We do not support adjustments and settings from other applications embedded in DNG files.
Other file support
TIF/JPG/PSD/PNG files that are not in RGB color space cannot be adjusted within Capture One and will be read-only.
Layered Tiff: Capture One 9.1 onward can support Tiff files with alpha channel or layers saved in the file (from other apps like Adobe Photoshop) but for viewing purposes only. Reprocessing the image will result in a new flattened image.
PSD: Capture 10.1 onward can support PSD files in the viewer. The PSD can contain any adjustments, layers, text or smart objects but must be saved in Photoshop with “maximize compatibility” enabled. Reprocessing the image from Capture One will result in a new flattened image.
File size limitations
- Smallest supported file for viewing: minimum side of 16 pixels.
- Smallest supported file for editing: minimum side of 512 pixels.
- Largest supported file: 715 megapixels or 65,000 pixels on the longest edge.

RAW files support with known limitations listed in the notes section is available here. Special or auxiliary modes (like pixel shift) are only supported if noted. I never did an uninstall. Just do the normal procedure and, if asked, overwrite the old C1. Never get in trouble with this action.

STILL no support for the Z 9's High Efficiency and High Efficiency* raw file formats? C'mon guys...adding the HE and HE* raw support should have happened ages ago. If the issue is lack of an SDK from intoPIX...you should be all over them to supply you with it (and Nikon should be all over them too).
I run into problem when updating C1 to 15.3. Now I can not activate or deactivate C1 on non of my two Mac´s and therefore I am not allowed to run C1 :(. For me there is always problem to install the new update, why must it be so complicated with C1? others have solved it much smoother for the user.

This version can't even start on my PC - it asks me to download .Net framework (and I already have plenty of runtimes installed - 4.x, 5.x, 6.x). Had to rollback to 15.2.2.5 which works fine.
Did you ever test it?

I installed both versions side-by-side and compared executables (captureone.exe) - in 15.3 its size is only 380 KB, in 15.2.2.5 it is 29 MB.
But 15.3 has captureone.dll (26 MB), which is missing from 15.2.2.5. I assume they made bootstrapper more lightweight by moving all the code to DLL.
Also analyzed exe headers, a lot of differences...

finally managed to fix it by re-installing different package of .net core 6 (the error message was quite confusing).

I have a problem with sorting images. It keeps switching to manual
I think this is where we submit bug reports? I'm having an issue where the crop tool does not stay in Unconstrained after I switch it, so I continuously need to set the crop mode from Original to Unconstrained. I've tried right-clicking to change and clicking in the tool selection bar.
same question from Brad Hill, "STILL no support for the Z 9's High Efficiency and High Efficiency* raw file formats?" This is important update for Nikon users. Please update this ASAP.
The new crop ratio behavior is really annoying. Now we have to set the crop ratio every time instead of C1 just remembering it from the last time the tool was used.
I found a solution for a part of the problem: After the Sony A1 firmware update, you can choose different option of RAW files compressions. You should use the older RAW uncompressed or RAW compressed option, not the steps between. Then it works again. So we have to wait for a CPO software update to resolve the problem of the files produced with sRAW, mRAW, L RAW options in the camera.
So does CaptureOne update previous versions when new cameras are supported? In my case I have the R5C but am still running CaptureOne 21 (14.4.1). In my Aperture days this was the case.

For a portion of the issue, I found a solution: Following the Sony A1 firmware upgrade, you have a variety of RAW file compression options. Use the more traditional get all names guide to this blog RAW uncompressed or RAW compressed options instead of the intermediate steps. Once more, it functions. Therefore, we must wait for a CPO software update to fix the issue with the files created by the camera's sRAW, mRAW, and L RAW choices.
